Currently I own the first iPad 1 first generation (the original).

should I wait for the next release with mini LED?

5G is not a big deal for me.

If you’re going to be keeping it as long as you have the very first iPad (Very impressive by the way!), then I would definitely wait. 2020 is already half over and the next update is going to be big with the mini LED and big processor jump. The current Pro is in limp mode face lift phase, just like the last model year of a car that’s about to get a redesign. Slight face lift (Lidar camera module) and a new engine tune to give 5 more HP (A12Z processor) to boost sales before the new model arrives.

Why do you want a new one? If your current iPad is doing everything you want out of it - why spend more money??

You should wait. The 2020 iPad is nearly identical to the previous model. It was released for marketing reasons because they couldn't get a meaningfully updated device ready in time.

If you can afford to wait until March-April 2021, wait. If not, buy. It's a really good tablet regardless of what's around the corner.

If you are somewhat tolerant of not having the latest device (which obviously you are ;)) but feel like you need an upgrade right now, maybe consider getting a used or refurbished 2018 model of the iPad Pro.
You get all the enhancements periphery-wise (latest keyboard if you want/need one, latest iteration the Pencil), software support for another few years, a fast processor (albeit not the latest one), current display technology, and all of that at a considerably lower price point.
Of course, it all depends a bit on whether you can get a used/refurbished model in good condition for a good price. If the difference is only around 100$, you might as well get the new one as it comes with more storage by default. I actually recently got a 2018 12inch 64GB 4G model with Smart Keyboard for around 700$, less than a year old (got the regular Apple Care on top), perfect condition with 95% battery capacity remaining. I don't absolutely need 4G, but the equivalent model new price wise (128gigs instead of 4G) would have been at least 999$ plus another 199 for the basic keyboard folio. That felt like an ok deal to me, considering it still has another 3-4 years of software updates in it.

A refurbished ipad pro 11" 2018 direct from Apple store is the best deal right if you want/need a upgrade now in my opinion. Maybe coupled with a Magic Keyboard which should be compatible for at least the next, if not two generations of Pro ipads.

I'd say wait. Even if the newer model doesn't turn out to be a great upgrade, the 2018 models will drop in price even lower and will be great purchase!

I would not wait another whole year for a new iPad. If you’re always waiting on the next one, you’ll never get one. Anything you purchase right now is going to be a crazy improvement over what you have now.

Are you looking for a pro, or just an iPad? If you don’t need a pro, I’d consider an Air 3. You could probably find a good deal on a refurb from Apple, or just a new one on sale somewhere. It’s a nice step up from the base model, with a better display and faster processor, but without the total cost of a pro.

OR, like others have mentioned, maybe get a refurbished 2018 pro.

Either way, I wouldn’t wait. That’s a year you could be using a MUCH improved device.

I second this.

Get the current 2020 iPad Pro. If you don't need 5G then why wait for a device that may or may not launch in the next 6-12+ months?
I don’t need 5G

We don’t have an Apple store in our country.

I got my IPP last week and it’s definitely an upgrade from the 1stgen. I would buy it now, especially If you can find a deal. I think the 2020 is a bit more future proof with the 6gb of ram and improved cooling architecture

I would consider waiting for 2 weeks and see if anything (iPad Air?) is announced at WWDC. But to wait another year, or more, for a new iPP suggests that you don't really need one now. Also, the current 2020 iPP was released 3 months ago; IMO, not a long time. Even though some would argue that it is no better than the 2018, I think that there is enough of a gap to warrant the price.

Slim chance of that, IMO. The Air 4 rumours suggest that it will be most likely a downscaled iPad Pro 11” (no LIDAR, maybe fewer speakers, possibly less RAM). If Apple puts an A13 in it this summer, they might as well write all the current iPad Pro 11” off, as most people will then opt for this new Air instead. Apple could, of course, just put an A13 in the current iPad Air 3 body, making it an “incremental” update, but then it will outperform the current A12Z-based Pro, which makes no sense either. Apple also used to refresh Pros & Airs separately, if I remember it correctly, in October in March? I would happily buy a “lighter” 11” Pro-based Air tomorrow, but not sure if Apple will release it any time soon, considering the current Pros are just 3 months old.
