I doubt it.

Still waiting. They didn't want to let me upgrade to the wireless keyboard and mouse at first. Since doing that is as simple as swapping out, I was confused. But the problem was that by upgrading my keyboard and mouse, they would have to throw away the wired ones. But the manager eventually gave in and upgraded me for student prices.

I ordered

2.8 Ghz octo-core processor
320 GB hard drive
2 GB Ram
Airport Card
ati hd2600xt
wireless keyboard
wireless mouse
apple care

total after student discount and tax: 2817.46

Wow! I need to find me a student girl friend. (Not going to happen, I'll be 66 this year) Mine, same options but with 8800GT ($200), was about $3450. Thats over $400 savings.

I actually saw a post by someone who bought theirs through ADC and did the very same thing. Ordered it with the ati 2600 xt to tide them over until the 8800GT came in stock, and then was shipped to him. Its something I'm seriously considering, as I can probably ebay the ATI after I get the 8800gt, and I don't want to wait a month extra just for my computer.

This 8800GT thing sucks

Don't you think the BTO option page should inform you that this option delays your order 5 weeks? As I recall (I was really excited) the shipping date came up after the order was placed and did not give any reason. (or did I miss it?)
I have never done a BTO before so I though it must be normal. An email to Apple confirmed the delay was because the 8800GT is not available.

I'm not sure I would have done anything different. But why announce the Mac Pro early if the options EVERYONE wants (graphics cards) are not available.

Just out of curiousity but what would you need two Geforce 8800GTs for?

I'm not sure. I do run heavy, heavy matlab with heavy graphics output. So maybe, I'd like to do that with one of the 30 inch monitors while watching some silly movie on the other monitor, and running a separate 'monitors-worth' of Parallels running MS Schmindows. Do you think putting 2 of these boards in the machine is overkill?

*ahem* Let me be the first to say, "Unboxing Video." I don't care that it'll be virtually the same; the fact that it IS a newer product makes it special.

::is typing from new Mac Pro::

Sorry, I was way too excited, doing a video didn't even cross my mind.

Anyway, first impressions:

The machine is absolutely silent EXCEPT for the hard drive. It's a little loud when writing, but I am in a completely silent room right now, so I'm sure it's not bad under normal conditions. Otherwise, just normal applications running is pretty silent.

I haven't done much, only turned it on 20 mins ago. Either way, I haven't eaten today so I need to get dinner. So I'll hopefully return later tonight to answer more.

Hi guys,

So I am picking up the new Mac Pro from the Apple Store in NYC (just need the airport card now; will of course get 8800GT, ram, HDDs later) in a few hours.

So any questions you may have can be asked here. Don't expect me to take it apart though :p

As an ex-New Yorker, it's nice to know that NYC is still at least 36 hours behind London. Hope that you enjoy yours as much as I have been enjoying mine.

And yes, the 19 and 20 year-old labs pictured are ex-New Yorkers too (via Santa Fe).

Was in new york earlier now back in miami
5th ave, soho and 14th street apple stores are sold out.
I go to aventura and lincoln road downhere in florida and both stores are sold out.

I ordered mine online but was getting one for my office just my luck cant find one......lucky you snagged one.

I can just imagine the power cant wait to play with mine
but since i ordered the 3.2 version wait time is a couple of weeks :(

I was playing with the online configurator and recall seeing estimated delivery time change to "3-5 weeks" when I clicked on the graphics upgrade.

What I'm really curious to know is if the new Mac Pros are more "silent" than the older ones. There seems to be different definitions of what a silent computer is here but my first generation Mac Pro is definitely not silent. In my DIY sound treated room, the Mac Pro definitely hums and it is always audible.

I use my Mac Pro mainly for sound engineering (recording music) wit Logic Pro, and I have always wished it was more quiet.

I can only compare to my old PowerMac dual 2.7 which sounded like you were sitting in an airport; a huge jet-like noise would come on every few minutes. The new Mac Pro doesn't make that noise.

In any event, the hard drive in the new Mac Pro is very loud. The fans are fairly quiet.. I can barely hear them from 2-3 feet away... your sound-proof room might be very different.

Delivery

Right there on the screen is more like it--in bold, no less.

Not "Right there on the screen is more like it--in bold" I have a 30" monitor and by the time you scroll to the graphics section that box is long gone--off the screen. How about an asterick or something if an option is not available.

Anyway, as I said, I would have ordered anyway. Just thinking it would be nice to have the things that are not available stand out.

*bursting with envy* I want my Mac Pro tomorrow...well, hopefully it'll SHIP tomorrow anyway :)

So here's a good Q: What's the boot time like? 30 seconds? Less? I'm so used to my PC taking more than a minute, I can't imagine anything faster...

few computers are as silent as you may want them to be as long as there are any fans or hard drives. You will have to either go all SSD or enclose your MP in something that manages to balance cooling with sound proofing so that you can't hear it over your music. I figure if you have something that has some intake vents in the front but an open back, that would do the trick.

For Apple to treat the MP acoustically would open the system up to all kinds of potential heat issues.

Hey Guys, sorry for the delay.

Had to go to parent's house, now I'm in the middle of transferring files and programs.

The stock hard drive was loud when I turned it on, but now I can hardly hear it at all, and that's with writing 100GB of stuff to it, among other things.

So my verdict is that the mac pro is super silent. I can't hear the fans at all, just the hard drive now (as in, it's audible, not loud).

Boot time is less than 30 secs, I only booted once though, so I'll see how long specifically next time

ACDs

I also thought you guys might be interested in the fact that the store had no stock of 20", 23", or 30" cinema displays...

yeah, not silent by any means (i got mine for recording too), way less loud than my crappy dell, but not quiet enough to have in the room while tracking something like finger style acoustic or something along those lines.

i'm currently working out a design for a DIY "quite box" to put it in so i don't have to spring for extension cables to get it into the next room.

Sounds good! Let me know how that works out for ya.

Let us all know the handbrake information. Or if anyone else has any knowledge about them, post a link. and when you do, just post a screen shot if possible or at least the FPS.

i heard iso boxes are bad...no ventilation..more potential damage to the computer

the better idea is to get the computer out of the tracking room
