I'm upgrading from a 2009 MBP to a 2019 Macbook Air. I want to do a system transfer (or whatever it's called). Can I do this without a cable over wifi? Or do I need an elaborate dongle solution to connect the thunderbolt 3 to FW800?

I'll also need a new Time machine drive as the one I have to use with the old machine won't be big enough for the HD size of the new machine. Is there a good Portable Thunderbolt 3 drive? Or do I need to look for a USB C one.

Finally, I need a small, portable port dock with at least HDMI out and USBA connections to connect older peripherals. Any suggestions?

If you cross OS, MA is better.
On other hand, TM is more flexible that you can restore any pieces as you want.
So its depend what you want.

As a followup, I did a Migration Assistant transfer. Took easily over 12 hours. I had to leave the machine at my office overnight.

I would recommend against doing a MA assistant transfer if you have a very old system. It took a bit of finagling to get everything to work right after the transfer. iCloud settings and features like Handoff took a long time to get to work right.

I usually just copy my ~80 GB of data over manually using a USB drive. I have one of these.
Of course, the settings for display, touchpad, etc. don't carry over, but that's not a big deal for me.
