getting nothing but a white screen

I tried restarting my computer several times and holding down the option/alt key. When I turn my computer back on I get this white screen with a flashing looking folder image and a question mark that keeps flashing? any Ideas

You need to life boat that thing, target disk mode into another mac and see whats there.

That flashing ? means the Mac cannot find the OS to boot from. Most commonly this means a bad boot drive.
