Its not worth arguing with these cell phone companies

I'm not saying it's "right", but you can always just look at their map, find a place where they don't offer service, like out in the middle of the Boonies in Oklahoma and say you are moving there. They have to let you out of your contract then, though they could ask you for a copy of a bill or something with your new address on it (unlikely).

Or he could just man up. Pay the $300 and enjoy his new free phone and free service indefinitely.

I tried and failed

I just moved to AT&T from verizon. I've had my number since 1994 and I've been with "verizon" since 1993(yes it was a bag phone). I had five lines. Where I work(in a basement of large state building) and get no coverage from verizon. They won't do anything about not covering service in a building. I called telling them I had to have a phone that worked where I worked incase I needed to be contacted about my 87 year old mother. The woman from Verizon asked me if I could another job.
I had her repeat what she said after I stopped laughing. I have a great job. She said she was sorry I had work in a basement. I told her that her comments were worth the $75 fee and I would be porting the other four phones out as soon as their contracts ended.
I love my iPhone and I love been able to talk on my phone in basement.

Ok, so let's read the contract I signed:

They are breaking the contract.
I am using a provision in the contract to get out.

Calling customer service 100 times a day, or using ROAMING always on, would be cheating.

Anyway, could you please address my second question in regards to porting the number.

Stop hating!

You are correct. I have gotten out of a AT&T contract when the increased a pass through fee. What I can tell you is that it is a pain in the ass and you need to ensure that you document it , send a certified letter and if needed contact the PUC-

AT&T seems like the way to go in the US, but then again everyone complains about their carrier no matter who it is..

It's always a thing that differs.

In my town AT&T is crap. It's 3G according to the coverage map, yet there are many places where only EDGE is available. The 3G is fast but really the speed is worthless because the ping is so high. There have been countless times my iPhone never rang yet I'd get a voicemail when someone tried to call me.

In my town Verizon is amazing. I never lose 3G, I never get those random voicemails as my phone always rings.

It seems there are areas in the country where it's the complete opposite from my experience.

check out the coverage maps for your area from verizon's website. the exact maps will have all the dead spots in your area. go to them and make sure your phone is roaming. use a lot of data so VZW pays a lot in roaming fees for your account
