Getting past "restoring iPhone software" in restore

Any help with getting past this error message that prevents either downgrading or upgrading.? Using iPhone 4 ,which was jailbroken
Phone is in dfu mode
Here is what I have already tried:
complete uninstall and reinstall of iTunes, per apples exact specifications
(including any plist or iTunes files)
reboot
Tiny umbrella
3 different computers including windows as well as Mac
Switched USB ports
Any help or suggestions to fix, appreciated.
