How do so many of the Apps Store apps pull data from sites that appear that would have proprietary data? I have had a couple of ideas that I'd like to pursue in an iPhone app, but this is the main issue has kept me from proceeding. Do they get permission? Do they just do it and hope that they don't get a cease and desist? I would think that companies wouldn't like someone else to profit from their data.

    Any insight would be appreciated!

It depends on the site and the info.

Some sites, like Rotten Tomatoes, allow programmers to pull info from their site as long as they're not profiting from its use. It says so right on their site. Others may grant permission on a case-by-case basis.

Your best bet is to contact the site owners and ask before you go any further. Just in case.
