I always goof that up when I do the configuration. I'll be careful when I order!

I'm going to order the unit from Apple and get the display(s) at the Clarendon Apple Store.

Just waiting on a contract and retainer. *fingers crossed*

Good luck with getting the contract and retainer. If you can afford the 2.7, it would be my choice. Why not just get a 30" and just have one display? A refurb would make it less expensive. You mentioned getting AppleCare, just be sure that the PowerMac and display are done on the same purchase order.

Really can't afford the extra expense. Two 20" are close in price to one 23".

If I get paid from a photography client that blew a contract recently, I'll be able to get the dual 2.7 - honestly that's my choice - It'd be a good 4-5 year lifespan.

the only reason to go for the 20" ACD over the dell is probably color calibration. why not order one 20"ACD for color proofing and one Dell 24" for keeping all pictures open. it costs almost the same as 2 apple 20" (o.k. it looks sh#t, but so what).

also, $500 for a 2.7 GHz over 18 month of the project are $28 per month and well worth it. you're talking hundreds of pics, so you could save 30 min or an hour a day. that's a lot in the long run. especially when you're testing out stuff and you don't want to wait. you can upgrade to a raptor and more ram later and even get a faster HD. but you can't upgrade to 2.7 GHz.

did image analysis in science projects with 160 MB images. some time ago and all on wintel machines. believe me, 30 min a day is enough to wreck your nerves.

my 2 cents.

Just a suggestion since you're in Annapolis; why don't you drive up to the Apple Store here in the great state of Delaware (it's just off I-95 at Christiana Mall) and pick up the display(s) with no sales tax? It might be a bit of a longer drive than Clarendon, but you'll save a decent amount on everything, plus no worries about DC traffic. Just a thought :D

That's a GREAT suggestion!

I've pretty much decided on the Dual 2.3 as configured above with 4GB of total RAM and the standard 250 GB HDD. I'll add another HDD from OWC later and a USB and Firewire card.

Two 20" displays and a 1TB Lacie Triple will finish it off.

Processing about 100,000 images over 18 months.

I wish I were a real mathemathician, not just some guy toying around with mathemathicians in university talking bullsheit about string-theory in a sparetime.. I could maybe get stipend from school to buy such a monster giga machine. :D
