I hate audio notifications. My iPhone is set up as follows...

Phone switched to silent > no ring or vibrate notifications
Phone switched to ring > ring tone on, messages etc set to vibrate.

Now my watch i have turned the volume down and haptic is on.

When my phone is on silent I don't notice any taps. That said I don't notice them when the phones on ring either.

Have I a settings imbalance?

Ahhhh found the solution is to go into the watch message settings turn off mirror phone and select the options u want.

interesting, I have "mirror phone" on, and have mine set up the same way....no sounds and no vibrate. I think the mirror phone option is just for notification settings, not actual sound/vibrate settings.

With mirror on and my phone switched to silent I was getting nothing from my watch

my iphone 100% mute (side button)

my watch 100% 'Silent mode: on'

Haptic stength 100% with 'prominent haptic.

my sanity 100% improved.
