Now I'm really stumped. I seem to be going backwards.
I shot some video on the iPhone, downloaded it to my Windows computer, added it into iTunes by adding it as a file, synced it to my iPad 2, it plays just fine, but doesn't show up in iMovie, or Reel Director for that matter.
I must be doing something wrong.

OOOOOps saw that you're supposed to add as photo, and I forgot to check the "include videos" box.....

BTW you can "save as" those settings to serve as a profile for future conversions.
Many thanks again as this seems to be THE workaround.
Now I have to learn to iMovie.

How to Access Video from Kodak PlaySport on iPad2

It would appear that Apple only intends for iMovie on the iPad to be used with clips taken with the iPad. This is beyond dumb. I'm convinced there has to be a way to get clips from another camcorder on the iPad that can be used in iMovie. Lets figure this out.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try next?

I'm another one who needs to find a fix. The whole point of having an iPad 2 (2 - for me) is to take it on the road as a tool for blogging, sharing photos and video while on assignment. Rather than lugging a macbook. I just bought a Kodak PlaySport hearing that is was "mac friendly" only to find out that although i can import the .Mov file using the Connection Kit, I can't open them! All the great suggestions here are assuming you have access to your computer, I won't. Just my iPad2. Help, i leave tomorrow!!

I feel your pain bud, but the chances of you finding a turn-key solution to this before tomorrow are very slim. A real solution that doesn't involve a PC or Mac may end up in the realm of jailbreak first. I'm hopeful that Apple sees this as something user's expect and eventually implements an official fix to allow direct copy from camcorders... especially camcorders like the Playsport that generate files that are more or less identical to the iPad 2 camera's format.

OK, after hours of working it out, I think I have a solution, at least its working for me.
1. Download Aleesoft Free iPad Video Converter.
2. Open up the program and select new task.
3. Open up the video you want iMovies to "see"
4. Select "iPad HD Video (*.mp4)" then click options.
5. On the audio tab, the following should be selected:
-Double Channel
-aac
-44100 sampling rate
-128 bit rate
6. On the video tab, the following should be selected:
-h264 video codec
-30 frame rate
-2500 bit rate
7. On the resize tab, select the custom size and make it 1280X720, aspect ratio normal
8. Click save and apply.
9. Then pick your destination folder and select "Convert"
10. Once its done, put that video into any of your "Photo" folders that syncs with iTunes and you should be able to see the video in iMovie.

Good Luck.

I try this with an old AVI file I have right now

Yup! That works for my Kodak Playsport as well..

Holy Crap I found a solution! It was from one of the links I posted earlier and it is very simple (I thought I had tried it previously but must have been mistaken):

http://www.theiphoneguru.net/2011/0...hone-or-other-cameras-into-imovie-for-ipad-2/

1) Open video clip in QuickTime Player

2) Choose File->Save As

3) Select the "HD 720p" format

4) Sync the resulting file to the iPad using the Photos section of iTunes

5) The clip shows up in the iMovie app on the iPad 2!

This seems to work perfectly for the HD video clips my Kodak Playsport produces. I'm going to try it for my Canon Rebel T2i next. It will be a bit of a pain to have to convert lots of files but at least we have a solution. I'm sure there is a way to convert in bulk.

:)

Edit:

All we really need here is a Handbrake preset for this particular setting and we can queue up clips to convert in bulk and we'll be in business. I still don't understand why Quicktime Player is producing a file that is different than any other "iPad friendly" format but oh well.

Thumbs up for persistence! Hoping for an easier more direct way to do it...and with a PC, looks like you might have to buy Quicktime Pro...Anyone have luck with a PC?

This is one of the reasons I took the wait and see approach with the iPad 2. I have the original iPad, a playsport and discovered video shot in HD will not show up on the iPad. If I go down to the lower resolution and shoot video then it will transfer over with the camera connection kit. Kind of defeats the purpose of having a HD video camera though.

I'm not necessarily looking to do major duty video editing with iMovie but if I shoot 30 minutes of video with my playsport, I'd at least like to transfer and watch the raw video on the iPad if I were on vacation and away from my iMac where I do my real editing. Makes me wonder if I'll ever get an iPad 2. I guess I'll just wait for it to get "fixed" in the future.

Every so often, I think someone at Apple goes 'geez, we never thought someone would want to do that, that's why we did not write the code to work that way'. I work with engineers in the aircraft electronics biz and hear similar stuff like that from them all the time. But, hopefully they read up on this stuff and will come up with a fix..

I used the QuickTime method to convert the 720p files shot with my Canon PowerShot S95 to HD 720p. I was then able to add them to an Aperture project, sync them over to my iPad and access them in iMovie.

Zwiller's solution worked now doesn't

Hello, I converted and transferred HD videos using Zwiller's solution with Aneesoft Ipad converted. Videos transferred and could be seen in iMovie on the ipad 2. Thinking I had it beat I uninstalled a few other converters i was trying. Now the conversion occurs OK, itunes transfers the video as before and I can see the video under Photos on the ipad but iMovie no longer shows the clips under "Today" in video clips.

Just works? Not!

This bugs me too. I bought the camera connection kit for my iPad 2, and I was very excited to be able to upload the photos and videos from my Nikon DSLR into the iPad to quickly view and send out my photos as well as edit video clips in iMovie and post them on YouTube.

Everything transfers fine onto the iPad, and I can view and play photos and videos in the photo app, but unfortunately, I can't bring in the video clips from the photo app into iMovie. This is pretty disappointing. :/

I just converted a .mov movie from my camera. It converts videos for use on an ipad. It's done through itunes.
Select the video, From the Advanced menu, choose Create iPod or iPhone Version or Create iPad or Apple TV version. While converting, you will notice an item named "Converting..." appear in the list on the left.

The "Converting..." item disappears after the conversion is over.

When the conversion is complete, iTunes will create a copy of your movie in your iTunes library. There will be two movies listed with the same name. The sample_iTunes file with a kind of "MPEG-4 video file" is compatible with your device.
A very simple operation. I don't know why this isn't widely known.
Then simply sync your iPad.

Glad I could help. It took me about a 1/2 hour to find that out. Not bad. I don't know why more people don't know this. I searched the forums for awhile. Found nothing. A search on Google pointed me to the Apple support page.

The iPad 2 is great! It's like a mini computer.

Can't wait for that cookie!

Its limited to what iTunes will let you import, so a program like Aleesoft is good for others.

Thanks for sharing this! Do you know if it works in bulk if you select multiple files? If it does, while not perfect, it is certainly the best work around I've heard of. Even if it's one file at a time it's better than using QuickTime X because that only worked for Mac users.

video .avi on iMovie >> video converter on ipad / iphone

hello

i have the same problem, i wan't to use iMovie during trips without access to my computer.
I can't use itunes or another soft to convert and transfer files.

My underwater camera, a coolpix S5100 create HD 720 .avi video files.

i can import them with camera kit, i can play them in the photo app, but i can't use them with iMovie on my iPad2

i find a solution : an app "video converter" on app store (0,79 € )
it works well, very quick to convert a video file in the right mp4 file format.

the problem is the new video quality is not as good (to much compression)

I will try to send a message to the asian developer

did you try this app ?

Cyril

if you wan't to try the app
http://itunes.apple.com/fr/app/video-converter/id417722982?mt=8

i can't send a message to the developper JOONGKI CHA, he is Corean and i can't understand his blog !

the app support file compress to reduce the size of the video file. if he could add a setting to disable this function, it would be perfect : convert file on the ipad2 to add them in iMovie (without a pc / mac)
