Gift card balance & in-app purchases

Hi,

I got a gift card from a relative in the US, but didn't have a US account, so I set one up and got a couple of free games through it and decided to use the gift card credit for in-app purchases. When I go to use the in-app purchase for $9.99, it claims insufficient funds and wants me to add a (US) debit/credit card. I can clearly see I have a balance of $10 on the account though!!

What am I doing wrong?

Tax. You must've made your US account in a city where digital goods are taxed.

Ahh. I picked a family address in NY. Just changed to one in Florida and it worked. Shame it's not like the UK and you see the price upfront.
