GIMP and 10.4.6

I use the GIMP on a regular basis, and had no problems under 10.4.5. But today after upgrading to 10.4.6 and I opened the GIMP, all I get is a grey square box in place of the GIMP load screen.

is this an X11 or GIMP problem?
