Curiously, I've never been hospitalized for alcohol poisoning and I don't know anyone who has. Maybe your office parties are a bit more raucous than mine!

Alcohol poisoning is a very serious situation. We have had two college students die that way here in Boston. The parents sued the university involved.

Its not; her parents must be desperate for money.

In both recent cases they were both male. I believe that there might have been a female involved at some point. The parents had money, there stated reason was to get the university involved to monitor closer the actions of the students in their charge. There has been tighter restrictions on students and drinking.

I'm sorry but in my opinion there's very little the university can do and much less should they be liable.

You can't control what kids, or young adults, are going to do. Essentially you have to make a stand between free choice or being over-bearing. I'll conservatively assume the university has 10,000 students. What are the logistics of monitoring that many people, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year? Because if you don't, there will be some who drink irresponsibly, some who take drugs, some who attempt suicide etc etc. It's part of growing up (perhaps not the latter), and I'm sure the majority of members here have a university "horror story" revolving around drinking too much when not allowed to drink at all.

It's a shame for an academic institution to be burdened with the responsibility of "carer". I can't help but feel the parents are devastated by the loss and are looking for blame where there isn't any. It wasn't poor parenting or an oversight by the university, it was just a series of bad decisions which had tragic consequences. Should they have gotten very ill, but recovered, the blame would have been very different. It's just that fine line which was unfortunately crossed this time which suddenly changed everything.

If someone leaves the handbrake off their car and it rolls down a hill into a tree what do you think of them? What do you charge them with?
Now...what if it had run over a baby in it's path? The actions of the person (forgetfullness) were exactly the same, just fate had other ideas.

AppleMatt

Isn't the UK marriage thing 16 with parental consent and 18 without?
edit: Thanks latergator :)

Sorry, I don't know why I assumed it was a female. I guess when I read "college student died" I was thinking of the woman that was killed after being shot by police at the Red Sox celebration.

Edit: I was about to say some more, but AppleMatt stated it very nicely.

Also many of the suicides at local universities has been female. A death of someone so young with their whole life ahead of them is so sad.

Parental involvement is important. There was an article recently that Universities are allowing more involvement between parents and students. Contact via mail and the internet.
