just did exactly the same... one mac mini drone/donkey on its way!

id always buy a laptop as u can take it anywhere you feel like in the house... thats portabilty enough... bed is fav place!

But like you i needed a drone that i can keep on all the time doing my donkey work. i dont like the idea of max'ing out the processor and memory resources of my powerbook doing encoding stuff and downloading all night.

im not alone .... how nice :p

Another good reason?

I'm about to rest my 12" and get a mini + 20" cinema display. I was going to get a imac for all the extra speed etc, but really don't want to have to keep upgrading EVERYTHING, at least once I have the display, as technology rolls on I can just upgrade the box not the entire system. Considering recent speed bumps do you really think I will have a deficit of performance? I currently have a 1.33 12" PB with 756 Ram, I was going to get the top notch mini c/w 1gb of ram. What I am sad about is missing out on G5, dual layer DVD, snazzy graphics card etc :-( but my sensibilities tell me that one day I can afford a G5 tower because thats the only bit I have to buy..... Your thoughts?

Tedwin--

As I've mentioned, I went through a very similar decision matrix. I wound up buying a 20" iMac for the exact reason that it is all in one, and I doubt I would ever "upgrade" anything internally.

I think your reasoning is perfectly valid--I just took a different fork! Especially if you think you'll need the greater processing power of a PM in the future. I did not--I'm just running a law office on it.

Best,

Bob

I had the same dilemma a few months ago. During a fit of impulsiveness, I bought a 1.42MHz 512MB Mini when they were first announced and while it was a great machine, it wasn't a suitable replacement for my 12" 1.33GHz 768MB PowerBook. I ended up selling the Mini and went back to my PB as my everyday machine. Using it with a wireless keyboard and monitor spanning to a 17" LCD works very, very well.

Keep the PB.

i had the chance yesterday of picking up a brand new 17" iMac with 15% discount and was 'this' close to buying but in the end it was over kill for what i wanted it to do so i brought mac mini as stated, which has a superdrive.... but i do wonder whether i should have just got it anyway..... got to love apple products! :D

Ill definitely get a iMac next time i need to upgrade ...... so probably next week!

i hope they ship my mini today :(
