Can you still even purchase regular Apple Care for a new MacBook Pro? I don't see it as an option on the US site. Perhaps you can still get it by contacting them directly, but I was told you can not. Even if you can request it, it sounds as though the goal is to eventually phase it out.

Those kinds of warranties are always a tough pill to swallow, especially when it amounts to an additional $299 for anything other than display or enclosure. I know if I simply took the money that AppleCare would cost me for every Apple device I have purchased over the years the balance would be in the thousands.

Spilled drinks is a much more common occurrence than the mud puddle for sure. If not by you, then by someone else. I cringe when my wife reaches across my laptop to hand me a cup of coffee. I have a friend who gave his wife a brand new MBP for Christmas and she spilled a glass of wine into the keyboard that evening. Knock on wood I haven't done something like that in decades because I learned my lesson once the hard way a long time ago :)

Yeah I keep my drinks WELL away from my electronic stuff. Sometimes fate just isn’t worth tempting. I’ve spilled plenty of drinks over the years, it happens.

And apparently you can get AC if you request it. I’m not buying a new Pro soon I don’t think, so probably moot. I’ve never extended the warranty on any Apple product but if I was forced to buy the current MBPro I would extend AC for sure. Hopefully the next generation will have fewer horror stories though.

I was young and dumb and had a 32oz soda near my laptop and knocked it over and into the keyboard. That was the last time I ever kept a drink anywhere near my laptop. But my wife still insists on reaching across my laptop to bring me a coffee when she is making one herself. If I didn’t love her so much .... :)

Feel so bad for my buddy and his wife though. I believe she had it less than 48 hours before spilling wine into it. That will break your heart. On the bright side I believe it was covered by AmEx since they offer 120 days accident protection. I forget to follow up with him about that, but I know he was making a claim.

I am guessing if you have to request it though, they are looking to phase it out? They certainly don’t make any mention of it and I noticed that places like B&H have pulled it.

I am really hoping the next gen is a little more reliable as well. I know the “thin is in” has its fans as well, but personally I would like to see Apple also go the iMac Pro route and maybe offer a 17” and 15” workstation version that is thicker and more robust. It will probably never happen, but that doesn’t mean I can’t wish for it.
