John Wayne's real name is Marion...so times definitely change.

I wouldn't think of Marion as a girl's name at all. I would think of Marian as a girl's name.

I kind of like using so-called male gender specific names for names for women (e.g. Sydney, Michael). And, as has been pointed out in other posts, those "rules" change over time (e.g. Marion, Lesley).

I've known guys named Sidney and Leslie, but not Sydney or Lesley.

I had the opposite problem as a kid - a name so common that there were always 4-5 of us in the class in elementary school.

Same here. In fact, my first and middle names are among the most common given to boys, and have been for decades. It's my last name that gets the most comments from people. ;)

We gave our son a unisex name (Cameron), although we didn't choose it for that; we just liked the name.

My favorite girl's name is a boy's name and my favorite boy's name is a definitely not unisex. /shrug
Who cares.

What gender is Tuesday? Male or Female? Yes I saw a kid with that name parents no where to be seen.

My name is Ian.

I like it. Everybody knows I'm male based on my name, and it's common enough that people don't misspell it. However, it's uncommon enough that you don't share the same name as 4 other guys in a room. :) I've only had 2-3 other "Ian" classmates through all my years of elementary, and high school.

I got a similar feeling being a Mac user +10 years ago when Apple's marketshare was probably around 1%. My name's marketshare is probably around 1%. ;)

I can only feel sorry for people who have unusual names, or girls who have a boy's name (and vice versa), even if there's a variation in spelling. Having to spell out your name to people is annoying, or people asking for a reason or story behind your name ---- also annoying.

I have known several women who spell it Marion. In fact, far more the the Marions I've known spell it Marion, not Marian. I don't know, but is Marian more of a British spelling for the female version?

I've known guys named Sidney and Leslie, but not Sydney or Lesley.

Once again, the men I know spell it Sydney. No argument on Leslie.

For me, the issue is more the spoken name, where the spelling is unknown. :D

I remember a Tuesday from a few decades ago.

What would your guess be?

Yep, same as mine. ;)

I guess I think of Marion as a girls name because that was the name of the mother of one of my friends growing up.

Other than her, I really don't think I've ever known anyone with that name.

Kids born in the 2000s stick out like a sore thumb to me, just by the names their parents gave them.

Let's look at the list so far, from what I have noticed, and from when I was working with a client at a preschool:

-Anthony (yes this one SURPRISED ME!)
-Ryan
-Dylan
-Aiden (both male and female?)
-Madison*

To an extreme lesser extent:

-Ashley...For those who didn't know, this name used to be a boy's name. It wasn't until people started naming their baby girls Ashley that it just decided to jump genders and become a girl's name, almost exclusively. I am afraid boy names such as Ryan may soon suffer the same fate if we don't stop! ;)

*I believe any name that has the suffix -son, has the original meaning that you are somebody's son. (i.e, Johnson is John's Son).

What do you guys and girls here in these forums think? Feel free to add to the ever growing list. :)

Madison to me is definitely a girl's name and it's usually a pretty hot girl. Ashley is also now a girl's name, even if it may have been a boy's name in the past. I know a man named Carroll that I work with and went to college with a girl named Timothy, wich to me is very much a boy's name.

A friend of mine says her sister (a social worker) knows a lady who named her kid Cash Money.
And if that's not bad enough - get this - it's not pronounced cash money, it's cash mo'nay!

Classy.
