Thunderbolt on the new one, but not on the old one, Firewire not on the new one. So its ethernet for me. But it should work fine.

Ive used Target Disk mode a few years ago, worked fine too.
I hope the new one arrives this week, as his birthday is Saturday.

New Mac will be here tomorrow evening

Hi Everybody,
It will be here tomorrow!

I read the forum got hacked, but I cannot change my password, as I have no clue what my old one is.
And when I go to that page I have to log in again, but on the regular forum, I never log out, thus I forgot it.
So I will just have to take my chances, and if the perp gets my password and email address, I will hope that they cant do anything with it.

Logout, go to the login page and click on the forgot password link. Need your email you signed up with though (or user name).

Oh, great computer! LOVE the new Mac, and spent the entire day moving my files and deleting my stuff. I am leaving some Adobe stuff on it for him. What an ordeal to do this correctly, but I did it! Granny rocks!

I do have a couple of things that need to figure out, first one is that I cannot customize the desktop like we used to do. The icons are not pictures like they were. And I need to reinstall a lot of Adobe stuff, I know how to do that, its just going to be time consuming. And I know I will be asking more questions here, you guys have the answers!
Screenshot here for the icon problem,

Mavericks wanting updates for App store

When in the App store it asked for OS 9, to move down one OS for updates, I had no other option than to click OK. Wonder what was that all about?

And now Im in a 20 minute re-start, and just have to go to bed, as we will be up at 5 for the birthday for our grandson.
Powered it off,,,,,restarted, its OK now.
Taking time to re-download Pages, Keynote, iPhoto, and iMovie, but its almost done, tho iPhoto, had an "error occurred"
Oh, too tired, will be back early tomorrow morning, my eyes are blurry with looking at these screens.

Thanks in advance, this has been rather daunting.

One more before I fall asleep,,,,
Mavericks came installed, so why this?

It is 10.8.5, but I thought that all brand new computers came with Mavericks 10.9 already installed?

I guess I have to snag it from the app store and install it.

The older 27 is all ready for our grandson! All boxed up and in the middle of our living room! Couldnt have done it so quickly and so well without your great advice here!

More questions coming later, but first I guess I need to get up to 10.9 today.

Cant change the icons no matter what I try, thats too bad, as it used to be so easy.

Yesterday they would network thru the router as I always do, have both hard drives up on the desktop, now I get 'connection failed, try again' I think I need to go take a walk outdoors,,,,,,

If you created a new user account in the older 27" for your grandson, you have to go to System Preference → Sharing → Check File Sharing.

Oh, will do that now, but its odd that it worked yesterday and last night.
Selected Sharing, but still get Connection Failed,,,,,wont work in reverse, with the other Mac either.
Darn, as I always love to have both hard drives accessible on the screen of the big one, as I am always moving pictures and stuff back and forth. This really messes up my classwork, if I cannot do this.

Last night when I go to GO/Network, I see both of our other macs, my husband's and this one here. All I used to do is hit connect, then click on the HD, and the other HD pops right up onto the desktop and I can open it and move stuff all over. This morning neither are visible, and all the Ethernet cables are just as they were, and the internet is just fine on all 3.

Might have to call Applecare?

Oh, oh, no optical drive, so my Photoshop DVDs are sitting here on my desk, so I guess I have to go and buy one, $81 at the Apple store.
I have to re-install all my Adobe stuff.
Unless I can get it off of Time Machine backups? But Im pretty sure all those big programs will have to be done by their discs.

I am downloading Mavericks, 10.9 right now, and then will update all my apps again.

This is not my day, Mavericks install failed, "will not install on this computer"

Here is a list of the troubles and their solutions. Apple care too.

List of troubles,
1. New computer came with 10.8.5 and Mavericks install failed "will not install on this computer" Trying again,,,,,worked this time.
Solution, just keep trying. Then, update all your apps and programs which need it.

2. Go/Network, Failed. Yesterday night it worked fine. No change to my routter or ethernet cables. I always work with both HD on desktop as I move things constantly back and forth for my classes.
Solution, restart BOTH computers, make sure your ethernet cables are tight.

3. Have to re-install all my Photoshop and Adobe stuff, whoops,,,,No Optical drive, have to go back to the store and buy one for $81.
Could I take all my Adobe programs off my Time Machine, and will they install from there?
Solution, Apple Care, Mike, tried remote CD, it WORKED! Its another sharing goodie. But sadly, the Adobe stuff wouldnt work. So he said to go ahead and buy the optical drive, as it actually would probably work better.
But there is a page on Adobe's help section, which lets you download all your stuff and put in the serial #s. I am doing that now, takes a long time, but will let you know if it works OK.

4. Cannot customize my desktop icons and folders which I always have done.
Solution, wait for an upgrade to Mavericks, its a 'known' problem, and will be addressed at some time.

5. iCloud password? never had one?
SOlution, But even tho it asked, it hooked up fine, probably got the info from my iPhone. This is after the installation of Mavericks, and a restart.

6. How to whoosh an app off the dock I dont use much to make more room?
Solution, pull them 3/4 way up the screen, then let go, poof.

My grandson is THRILLED with my older 27 inch Mac, what a birthday present.
Already solved.

More to work on, screen saver and desktop, need to get it to recognize my iPhoto albums. Its stuck on the Mavericks ocean desktop, which is really beautiful.

The Adobe problem is unique, their programs throw all their stuff into bits and pieces all thru your computer, scattered like leaves. So bringing them over to a new computer wont work. Im downloading now, and time to take the dog for her walk.

Hope this helps other people, as the Apple care guy said that these problems of mine, were common amongst their calls for help.

Yep, I think the only app I couldn't restore via migration assistant from my old iMac was an Adobe app also, PhotoShop Express, will have to install that again from the DVD and then download all the updates thee have been to it.

The Apple Care guy tried to walk me thru the Adobe re-install, but it didnt work for either him or me.
He has had other people with the same problem. So advised me to call Adobe next week.
I use Photoshop and Elements daily, so it would be pretty nasty for Adobe to not be able to deal with transferring to newer computers for their customers.
But I will sure make the call.
I do have this older 24 inch Mac with every conceivable version of PSE and PS on it, but I want to use them on the faster and larger screen computer.
They should be able to fix this, its not an OS problem, as when I was before Mavericks, the same problem was there.
I have a couple more things up my sleeve, but if a new download(PS CS6) is corrupted, then my other plans probably wont work either.

At the rate Adobe is going, they're deserting their customers by moving to Creative Cloud. Customers don't need the latest and the greatest, but Adobe is forcing anyone with CC to do just that.

Adobe explicitly said that they will not be making a CS7.

I guess it's hasta la vista to Adobe in the next few years to me...

My classmates and I were also shocked by the prices and changes with Adobe's Creative Cloud. Its more for a business like our local newspaper, rather than people like us who use PS and PSE for hobbies and fun.
I use these programs constantly, and without PS and PSE I would be like a car without an engine. I do have Gimp, but I paid for PS and PSE, and want to be able to use them!
I do have all the programs on this old Mac, but I want them on my brand new large screen Mac.

I just purchased PS CS6 and PSE 11, so that I would have the latest and greatest, and that should sufficient for me for a few years at least, and not have to use CC.

I will call Adobe tomorrow, I just know they will be bombarded with calls, as there is some sort of a conflict with the new Mac OS, Mavericks. But it is only my Adobe products, ,none of my other programs have given me conflicts so far, and oh, do I have a lot of Fractal and super plug ins and 3rd party filter programs. They all are OK.
So its up to Adobe to take a serious look at this, as there are thousands of us.

BUT, OH, maybe this is a problem too! I de-activated all my(probably 8) versions of PS and PSE on the computer I just gave my grandson(except for PSE 6). Im thinking that I have to re-activate all of them on this new Mac before I can even get to the serial number entry place.
Maybe I better use the Adobe chat to get a heads up on this before I wrack my poor old brain any further.

CS6 works perfectly fine on my Macs without any issues.

Talking about the price factor, Adobe seems to have forgotten that not everyone is a business with unlimited resources/cash. They overprice their products.

Yes, everything worked just fine on all my Macs, till I did the deactivate thing and gave the old 27 inch one to my grandson with just one old version of PSE on it.

My new 27 inch,,,,,,nothing yet, will see what I can find on the Adobe forums or the chat option. I cant get to the re-activate page, nor can I get to the point to put in my serial number to try to activate it.

When and if I get this solved, I will let everybody know right away.

Digging into the Adobe help pages, and I wonder if I have to uninstall before I can reactivate?

The Adobe problem is the last one to overcome

This Adobe thing is a woeful conundrum now, Ive been on the chat with them for hours, and nobody can figure it out. So I sent all the invoices for ALL my Adobe products. I cant imagine how messed up this is. We should be able to De-authorize any program on the old computer, migrate everything to the new one, then authorize it there.
Not one single of my huge load of softwares failed, except for the Adobe stuff.

Are they telling us to give up and join Creative Cloud, by disabling all our old stuff? Or what the heck is going on.
I probably will have to call them and hope to goodness that I get someone better then the chat guys. This has to be fixed, though I do have all my Adobe stuff on this older 24 inch Mac. Not my new PS CS6 however and I sure need it.

I am disappointed in Adobe. But I cant get along without PS and PSE.

Download a torrent of the CS6 trial and pirate it :) Those Adobe goons don't deserve a single dime of the profits.

I wouldnt know how to do that. But a week or so ago, when one of my PS programs would not work on the other Mac, I was on phone tech support with Adobe. She fixed that particular problem. The Chat people somehow could NOT view my account, so the answer to fixing this fiasco, is to do the phone support option again, and then the tech should be able to see my account and see all my dates of purchase and everything else. Wish I could get her again, she knew her stuff.

Will try this today and let you all know. Was interesting that the Apple tech support people had heard of this Adobe problem, so guess its not me alone.

PS you can download the trial by following the instructions here:
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1208802
It's a little bit down the page.

This looks like an option! But it sure seems odd that my stuff did work and now doesnt, and there is no way to get to the re-activate page. THey even have instructions on how to re-activate your Adobe stuff, but where is that option to do it?
