With the moto Q when I drive I can put the phone in the passenger seat and hear the speaker phone. I demoed the 3GS at the apple store. Its speaker phone is not nearly as good.

If I was going to get rid of the iphone for a cheaper plan and such, I would at least get a Pre. It's the next best thing out there in terms of smartphones.
Otherwise I'd just buy a cheap go phone with 100 minutes and see if that's enough for the month. I wouldn't do it though, I really love being able to make calls, text (MMS coming soon), take pictures and video, listen to music, watch movies, play games and use apps/GPS, send emails, and get up to the minute news all on one device. It's amazing. No other handheld device merges all these services into one small device. And getting a cheap MobileMe subscription makes it even better to update calendars and pictures to the mobile cloud website. Wanted to mention that youtube is a nice distraction once in a while. The ability to access these services over 3G anytime is wonderful. I'd be pissed if my connectivity was limited to finding free wi-fi spots to tell the truth.

I know what u are talking about. I debated on what I would the data plan for. I reasoned that I prob use the data mostly to view news and info, and possibly play some online poker on the train going to/from work. For me, it was not worth it. I still have not found a reason for the data plan...

That's the thing! I don't hate my iPhone... I like it A LOT! I really do, that's why I'm having a hard time trying to walk away from it.
I'm trying to decide if saving money is better than spending $1200 per year on a handheld computer that makes phone calls or just get an iPod touch for $400 per year and have a handheld computer that doesn't make phone calls.
As I've said before. No one can make the decision for you but you. I don't know why you keep posting/asking the same question and spewing your theories. We all know the differences between the iPhone and iPod Touch. This internal struggle would best be played out on your twitter account or inside your own head than the threads you start about this.
You have plenty of insight into other things mac/iphone related. This topic, however - you have BEATEN TO DEATH.

I've been using a combination of iPod touch 1st gen 32GB and typical cell phone.
Looking at getting an iPhone so that I can carry one device around instead of three (cell phone, touch and camera).
Yes the addition of a compass, GPS and cell Internet are tempting features.

OP you already said you don't use the real phone functions of the iPhone much except for texting. And you were really happy with having just an iPod and a regular cell phone. Then go back to that if that's what makes you happy and that's all you need. But then you don't want to text on a regular phone cause it's easier on the iPhone. There is no right answer to this, no matter who has what opinion or what they have decided on themselves. You already have all the pros and cons listed. It comes down to your money and what you like and don't like and what you think is worth paying for.
(I thought AT&T lets you have the iPhone w/o data plan as long as there was a voice plan attached to the account. Is that no longer valid?)
instead of constantly bringing up theories in threads about how you want to know if you should do this or that, why not just try it out? borrow a POS phone, or dig an old one out of a draw or something, take your iphone sim, place it in the POS phone and use that for texts/calls and use you iphone for ipod/apps and see how long you last before you switch the sim back again.

Two Devices are Better for Me!
I live on an island just off the south coast of the UK. I have decided to purchase the new Touch when it arrives and go the two-device route for a number of reasons:
1. I recently purchased a Motorola Razr V3i, which I've been very pleased with for a basic, wearable phone...and one that can't be accidentally activated. It works perfectly with my car's Bluetooth system.
2. The iPhone 3Gs lock-in with only one carrier is a deal killer. That provider has virtually no coverage where my home is. What coverage they have elsewhere on the island is only 2G at best...and that's spotty.
3. I use my cell phone only for short, occasional calls and currently spend less than $20 FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR with my pay-as-you-go plan. The astronomically huge monthly cost of iPhone ownership simply can't be justified.
I am therefore much, much better off remaining with a good, basic phone plus a new Touch when it becomes available. The apps I'm most interested in are also quite suitable for the Touch and do not require the non-stop internet access provided by the iPhone.
I'd like to own an iPhone someday, but for now, the logistics and outrageous expense simply rule it out for the present.

I don't know where you're getting this $1200/year figure. I assume you're going to have a cell phone with a comparable minutes plan whether or not it's an iPhone. The most your iPhone will cost you per year is $30/mo * 12 mo = $360.
For me, since I already had a data plan on my POS phone before, the marginal cost was only $10/mo.
I'm Canadian, so forgive me if you cant do this in the US, but why don't you just cancel your AT&T plan, and drop in a pay as you go sim? Problem solved.
You said you rarely use the phone so minutes are not an issue, you'll have all the features of the iPod Touch, and still be able to text with ease.
Did you read the original post? I want a cell phone that just does basic calls. I won't have data at all. I probably won't be sending many texts either.
For me, the iPhone is $100/mo.
A normal go-phone costs me about $25 every 3 months.
Because I don't want an iPhone as an iPod touch. I want an iPod touch (with a fast processor and GPU) and a cell phone that I don't have to care about. I want to be able to leave my cell phone in my car if I want. I just want it in case I need to make a phone call. I couldn't care less about data. Wifi gets me by.
Of course the iphone is beautiful but in the end if your not happy and its costing you money you could have in your pocket. A regular phone and a touch sounds like a good idea. Whats the point of having a fancy phone if your not going to use it? and its just wasting money.
If you rarely text - what kind of minute plan are you on (you mention you have SOOOO many rollover minutes)
If you have the 450 min - that's 39.99 (less with a FAN) + $30 for data + taxes
That's not $100 - that's at most $80 or so.

This is just not an accurate analysis. You have to subtract the cost of your chosen solution from the cost of the iPhone at the minimal usage you plan to get from your GoPhone.
Cost of iPhone:
$199 Purchase Price of iPhone 16 GB
$1872 Service 24 mo @ $78/mo (450 min., no text)
[$250] Estimated resale value of unlocked 2 year-old 3GS

Booo hooo everyone. I switched from a Sprint ERP plan that was 500 mins and unlimited data/texting for a total of $15/month to come to the iPhone. Everyone should stop complaining about how it costs so much. It's not like it was $30/month when you bought it and now all of a sudden they raised the price to $100/month. You knew the price from the beginning. Marginal cost breakdowns? Who cares! Do whatever you prefer because it's better to be happy and out a few extra bucks a month. Do you sit home by yourself on a Saturday night and buy a 12 pack of Beast Ice and drink it by yourself or do you go out to a bar and spend 5x the price on drinks? Since it's all about marginal cost, I'm sure you sit at home.
For those underage...have you ever purchased a soda? Why? Water is free. It's all about the marginal costs my friends. Screw buying things for the fun of it. 😕

Why the hell do you have unlimited texting if you don't use it? You can't blame the iPhone for a plan feature you chose that is not required for you to keep your iphone. By your logic, why not throw in some other unused but not required features? Seems to me you could say your monthly iPhone cost was much higher if you only got creative:

This kid (TheSpaz) contradicts himself so much even he doesn't know what is going on.
He says he texts a lot, hence the unlimited text plan, then turns around and claims he spends $25 every 90 days on a Pay-as-you-go plan (coincidence that AT&T happens to sell a $25 Go Phone card with a 90-day expiration? I think not).
At $.20 cents per message, that's a maximum of 42 text messages/month OR 33 minutes/month.
Can everyone please just stop posting in this stupid thread - you know it's pointless anyways. Even if he does end up ditching the iPhone, you know in two weeks after the new iPod Touch is released he'll be making a thread, "Anyone regret ditching their iPhone for an iPod Touch?"

Yeah but you already paid $500 for the iphone 3G, and you're not going to get that much back for it when you sell it. You have a sunk cost of [$500 - resale value].
So the first number isn't $2900, it's:
$2900 - [$500 cost of iphone - resale value] - [sum of monthly payments to date]

TheSpaz, it sounds like you've made up your mind. Every time someone suggests a reason you should keep the iphone you come back with an argument for why you shouldn't. So fine - don't. Do the ipod touch and gophone. It seems like you just want people to try to talk you out of it so you can shoot them down.
You left out all the international dialing/data plans TheSpaz could add into his number which brings him way over $300 a month. For a single line. CRAZY!!!
