Anyone who denies the screen is crap on the Mini is a bit crazy... or has poor eyesight.

It's all so disappointing because man is the Mini an awesome design. I think we're seeing the remnants of Steve Jobs: products that were in the pipeline but aren't getting finished off properly. It's sad to see such degradation so quickly.

It's not crap - while I will agree that there is much room for improvement, I will never agree that the screen is crap on this device. Today I read several academic PDFs without having to zoom in, and it was a very enjoyable experience (usually I have to print them out, or sit here at my desktop, which I really don't like to do when I'm reading). The other thing to note about the device (which you touch on), is that the device is more than just screen resolution - every time I hold this device I'm impressed. The quality is amazing, the design is beautiful, it feels great, it feels solid, the user experience is excellent. One thing I used to love about my gen 1 iPad was the games, and this device is much better than that was - The Room (I think it's number 1 in the App Store) is my new favourite game right now, what a great all around device this is!

So overall better than the nexus 7 and worse than kindle fire hd. Seems about right.
Get them side by side in front of you, and the Nexus 7 is far and away the better display. It's just a fact. I have both, and there's a big difference. I wish I could say that the Apple looks better, since I paid the hefty premium. But I'd be lying if I did.

It's no different than benchmark results, they may or may not have any bearing on the experience one has in day to day computing. Testing, evaluating and benchmarking are fine in the lab... but in the real world day to day use, the experience is the only one that matters.

I agree the Nexus 7 has a very nice display. Much better than the Mini. Too bad it's crap Android.

I thought this paragraph was particularly interesting:...

Gizmodo are geeks and geeks often appear to value specifications over user experience, so no real surprise they think a higher-resolution 16:9 display that showed less content is an ideal tradeoff for the iPad Mini.

I hated the display on my nexus 7. Sure it was sharper but I found it was really washed out. That and i loathed how it handled automatic brightness. To each their own.

If Apple were to have run old apps letterboxed on a 1280x960 screen, the already small text and graphic elements would have been 25% smaller still. The author didn't think through that statement very thoroughly.
You and I both know that, if Apple had gone with a 1280x960 screen, everyone would be trumpeting how it had 20% more pixels than a Nexus 7 and how amazingly sharp it looked.

Finally starting to see published evidence that the mini screen is antiquated.

Welp, this will only help the odds of a retina mini appearing next generation. Guess they have to sell it to all the early adopters first.

Screen is NOT antiquated...

......it is obsolete.

Ok? That statement doesn't really have anything to do with mine though.

Nice article. The same can be said of this forum.

There's no credibility in here. It's just a pissing contest to see who can get their point across the loudess.

Some members get it directly in the face.

Not pretty, but you can't look away.

What benefits are those besides it being faster? I'm talking about the **** App Store for tablet Apps to begin with.
Although in AppleLand a big deal is made about apps, not all of us do everything within an app. Most of my use is within the browser. Especially one as good as Chrome.

That aside, there's so much more that one can do with Android, yet if one does not learn it, they can't be expected to know or understand.

Are you british or something? What's the the use of "one"...

What am I supposed to "learn"? I have a Nexus 7 and a gazillion other gadgets. Please oh master, teach me...

And by the way, I love Safari in iOS. Chrome is ugly. Anyway, list a set of specific things that you can do with Android that you can't with iOS that anyone would actually care about.

To be fair, Chrome on android is abysmal and borders on unusable. The previous stock android browser was exponentially better.

My point is that, at the lower resolution, there is plenty of defense for why a higher resolution would have been bad and why it doesn't matter that the Nexus 7, nook, and Fire HD have better resolutions, but had the Mini had a higher resolution, all anyone would be trumpeting would be that higher resolution, and any letter-boxing would be seen as "temporary" or "no big deal."

Which Chrome on which Android version are you using? It runs perfectly well on my 7 running 4.1.x.

Whatever the newest version of chrome was before I got rid of my nexus 7 two weeks ago.

I don't even think resolution is the issue. It is screen quality - I have seen some gorgeous lower resolution screens (and some crap HD screens).

Why Apple did not put a premium panel in this solution - given the lower resolution - must either have been a commercial decision (margins) or because they had limited choice from suppliers who could supply 7.9" 1024x768 panels (which is quite an unusual panel form factor at 7.9 inches).

I think it was the latter.

I have no idea, then, what you were looking at that was "abysmal and border[ing] on unusable."

It runs as smooth on mine as Safari runs on my 4S.

lol ... some people have poor vision and I don't mean 20/20, I mean they just don't notice things. If you work in an office, look at how many people come to work with eye crust, buggers, or dandruff on their clothes. They aren't bad people, they just don't notice things. A lot of people are fine with the mini's display. I think it looks horrible compared to retina. Others might think it's fine and are happy with it.

this is one situation where I'm happy to have crappy eyesight :) I love my Mini and I don't notice anything wrong with the screen whatsoever. The average Joe will love it so it's gonna do well no matter.

I'm not going to explain it on here again. Google it if you want to play ignorant.
