After two months of daily use my iPhone 11 Pro Max and Apple Watch Series 5 have already collected a handful of screen scratches. Even though the scratches are barely visible under normal circumstances (only from certain angles under strong lighting) they are there. I’m very careful with my devices, never put them in the same pocket with other objects and always clean them with a lint-free microfiber cloth. However, I can’t avoid airborne hazards such as dust, the world isn’t a clean room, dust particles are everywhere. It’s high time glass resistance to scratches improves on Apple devices. I for one would prefer sapphire even if it breaks more easily.

Glass is glass.

Get a tempered glass protectors for your watch and phoned and just switch them out every 6months or so.

I don't think screen protectors should be an option let alone the solution. All these devices are meant to be used as they come out of the box: naked. Do you cover your car with a protector too? It's the materials that have to get better, more resistant to scratches.

I will say the ion-X Glass on the Series 5 Apple Watch is terrible. It does scratch very easily, which is one of the reasons why I upgraded to the Sapphire display.

But anyways, it’s worth noting that sometimes scratches might be more ‘surface based’ on the oleophobic coating, meaning, that might dissipate as the coating wears off, as it’s naturally organic. That’s happened to multiple members where they’ve had these very fine/hairline scratches on their displays, but they dissipate/wear off, because the coating wears off with usage over the course of time. It varies how deep the scratch is.

This is why I buy Tempered Glass protectors for my Watch and iPhone, they are protective and are cheap to replace after sometime, and your device remains in pristine condition.

Yes, I do cover my car in a protector to, it’s called Paint Protection Film, and many cars come with it pre-installed on areas that are susceptible to scratches due to rocks and other elements, and you are able to add more and either cover certain areas or cover the whole car. Many of us get this applied before we drive the car off the lot, there are entire businesses focused on this.

Your argument makes 0 sense in real life. Life happens, unless you live in some sort of highly controlled lab?

You really believe dust floating in the air scratched your phone?

You don't think screen protectors should be an option? These devices are "meant to be used" however anyone wants to use them. I choose to protect my smart phone because I know it will get scratch or cracked if I don't. Why do you think you should be able to tell me how I can or cannot protect my phone?

I used to HATE screen protectors (they were the film type) UNTIL I came across the tempered glass ones.

Nowadays, I'm ready with tempered glass from day one of my new phones; it really is much more responsible & cheaper to spend $7 for prevention than to pay $300-$500 for damage.

This isn't hard, people.

Maybe you should create a lab and start running your own tests to strengthen glass. I don't see how you'll find anything satisfactory outside of taking matters into your own hands. Technology moves at the pace it moves at. Either you contribute to it moving faster or you deal with it.

Yes, many do cover the front of their cars exposed surfaces with paint protection film to stop rock chips or other damage from debris... Bad comparison

You can choose oleophobic coating or a 100% scratch-free screen. I have a $2 screen protector on my Pro and it's still flawless after (wow!!! it's been a while) 3 months, but the screen will smudge like I'm at KFC.

Personally I don't care. My XR had millions of micro-scratches and it annoyed the hell out of me - I'm better off just applying rubbing alcohol on my protector (since it was $2 anyway) and cleaning it, or replacing it if is the case.

Can't help but disagree. My Xs Max (and 8+ before it) have been amazingly durable living though daily life, the old phones seemed harder to scratch but cracked with a light tap on a hard surface. Xs Max in particular has been dropped on concrete etc and its glass is scratched but still fine. I can take micro scratches but can't deal with a shattered screen.

Especially with both sides now being glass again, peoples iPhone 4/4S were always shattered on at least one side, I've seen that a lot less with the new phones.
Same and you can stop scratches with a screen protector. Any bad drop won't have a break stopped by a screen protector.

Any real car enthusiast who has a muscle car or sports car in general considers some type of clear bra/vinyl/ceramic protection on the front of the vehicle. I have a ceramic coating on my Mustang GT and Charger Scat Pack. It Makes a huge difference in terms of protection against minor rock chips, etc. So you’re entirely accurate.

The "toughest glass on any phone" (Apple's words) scratches very easily from normal use compared to the eight iPhone models (from iPhone 4 to iPhone X) I have owned before. Year (or more) of ownership of each. Careful, normal handling. No screen protectors. No scratches on the screen. Same careful handling of iPhone 11 Pro: scratches within a week.

I had a fancy (49$) tempered glass screen protector on my Galaxy S8. It got cracked on one corner. Tried to use my fingernail to remove it to replace it, and embedded teeny shards of tempered glass under my fingernail. SUPER PAINFUL. Never again. I can live with tiny scratches but ION X glass I have yet to put a scratch into (my Galaxy watches all have gouges).

It always makes me cringe to see kids using their spidered glass cracked iPhones in the wild. I couldn't do that.

Despite the painful tempered protector experience, anything is better than the bubbled up version my iPhone 3GS had back when. That got removed and tossed really quick.

The only phones I see that don't crack (but can still scratch) are plastic Android pre-paid junk. Plastic. No thanks.

I'd rather do the scratching on my own. IMJS

If you find damage on your screen after removing one then no doubt it actually protected it from a far worse fate.

That’s just incredibly unfortunate, they don’t tend to shatter like traditional glass. I’ve often just casually snapped them in my hand when I’m done with them, shards never fly anywhere and where it is shattered, it’s always blunt.

Also as for the plastic protector, that’s simply bad application. Apply it slowly and push the bubbles out as you go along.

All the iPhones on display at the Apple store at my place are filled with scratches. A tempered glass is more resistant to scratches compared to Apple's glass.

Woah! Sounds like you had a terrible experience. Why did you choose to do that with your fingernails? On my XS Max I had my first Tempered Glass protector for about a week and then dropped the phone and cracked the protector, it has one large crack going from the notch down. All I did was to take the phone to the closest network store, bought a new protector they then removed the cracked one for me (no extra charge) and applied the new one and I was back in my office within 20mins with a fresh new protector and having paid about $19, versus having the actual screen cracked and paying far more than that.

If you find damage on your screen after removing one then no doubt it actually protected it from a far worse fate.

Agreed. I strongly recommend everyone to get the Tempered Glass, and most people I know will say “oooh but that’s so expensive”, a few months later they drop their $1000 phone, screen cracks and they have to pay many times more why they would have paid to simply replace a Tempered Glass protector.

Some people love learning the hard way over and over again.

I used my fingernail thinking that was the only way to peel it off. But I'll never use another tempered glass again. they shatter easier than the phone and are hard to remove when that happens.

I’ve never had a glass screen protector scrarch my screen and I’ve used them for years and am using one now. It must’ve been taken off with the wrong tools that scratched the screen
