Honestly, I feel that if this was announced before Covid it would of had a far different reaction.
The level of emotional reaction instead of logical ones has increased ten fold over this period of time. People have become so quick to speculate things that have no actual basis in reality anymore. Add in the fact that many people have lost faith and trust in their own governments decision making and you have a recipe for disaster.
So I should trust people who make 10x what I make in a year for lobbying a single deal?

Organizations that actually deal with this problem (as opposed to armchair CSAM experts) seem to think otherwise.
Let’s not forget the “screeching voices” quote, while quoted by Apple in their internal memo, comes from NCMEC‘s mouth.
Sad Giggles, you haven't the faintest clue of what goes in trying to fight these abominable crimes, and yet again seems more about obfuscation rather than admit its surveillance whatever way you look at it.

Perhaps you should read In the Garden of the Beasts. You might learn something and understand why this proposal from Apple to insert tools into hardware is such a bad idea.

I’m starting to think Apple should do what they did for the Safari address bar in the latest beta: offer choice.
Now that I could agree with. <surprise> Still a problem that the code and hash is there on my device, but if I could totally disable that part, and know that it's disabled at any time, or even better, have it off my device and know that -- that would be acceptable. I'd probably even turn on iCloud Photos again.

I’m not sure I follow but there is no setting of that kind in the photos settings. What exactly can you disable and where?

You can turn off location services for photos. My preference is set to “never” allow Photos to use location sevices.

Has Tim even commented yet?

He runs the company. He’s ultimately responsible for this. Plus, I’ve never really cared for the guy. And no, no official statement has been made by Cook that ai know of, but it doesn’t matter.

If governments could compel Apple to change these features to do something awful, they could compel Apple to change any features to do something awful. And there are plenty of features that know far more about our data than a double-blind hash matching algorithm, and they aren't under this intense level of suspicion and analysis.

No, specifically they cannot, or at least not as easily. In common law countries (which is a lot of them) they can only do so if it's proportionate, and there is actually quite a lot of precedent that while companies cannot be compelled to create additional blocking on detection features from scratch, they can be compelled to add additional values to systems that already exist.

For example, in the UK see Cleanfeed, a system for UK ISPs to block CSAM, which was repurposed by court order and now needs to block content relating to trademark infringements for handbags.

The judgement specifically calls out that the court could not have ordered ISPs to create such blocking from scratch.

Set aside all the technical aspects of this situation, the privacy arguments, the legal justifications, etc for just a moment.

This is becoming a slow roll public relations disaster for a company that touts privacy in it's advertising. We can sit here on what is a fan boy tech geek web site and argue all the technobabble we want about on device, off device, this scan, that scan, hash, human review, cloud, no cloud.

All people who care about privacy hear is that Apple is going to scan their photos. All the iCloud on/off is techno mumbo jumbo to them. It's all static. People don't have time to do a deep dive into stuff like that. They're too busy watching Beat Shazam or Hell's Kitchen and eating pizza.

When the tag lines in your advertising are:

"Privacy. That's iPhone"

"Privacy is King"

"We're in the business of staying out of yours"

and

"What happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone"

And people PERCIEVE that's not the case, that's a PR and a brand image FAILURE.

The technological or the moral reasons do not matter at this point. This is becoming a colossal egg on face moment for Apple, and they seem to be in denial about it.

Time to punt. Knowing when to make a stand and when to fold is important. Apple should quietly back away from this for now. Maybe regroup and work with other providers to come to an industry wide standard on the issue so they're not set apart like they are now.

They're making a mess of it, which is not what I would expect from the world's most valuable company.

Why make a huge drama out of something that's very simple? Nobody is looking at your photos.

Privacy doesn't give anyone the right to commit a crime.

People do deserve their privacy. This is not like having a camera watching their every move. It's just an AI filter that checks for illegal images, images used to commit a crime. If it finds any, it will raise a flag.
Apple is trying to protect themselves from being accused of protecting criminals and getting involved into a lawsuit.
There are people who think that by using an Apple device they can take and store illegal pictures.

Governments want Apple to create a backdoor, something that would affect the security and privacy of the devices. What Apple is trying to do is implement a non-invasive way to help combat crime, so certain governments and haters don't complain that Apple protects criminals.

Maybe as you suggest, Apple should put this to rest, and let people continue with their business causing pain and suffering to helpless children. It may not bother some people at all, until it happens to someone close to them. Then they will be actively in favor of what Apple is trying to do here.

Just like with the use of a face mask. People are complaining saying "is their body and their right not to wear a mask", without any concern for the people around them. The mask is to protect those around you and protect yourself.
Same thing in schools now, Mothers against having their children wear masks "because is their right not to do so". This is ridiculous!
Just wait until they or their children get sick with COVID-19, their mind will change and will be rallying in favor of wearing the mask. It's already happening, just search in YouTube. Many of those against it, or those who used to say that COVID-19 doesn't exist, are now pleading to people to take it seriously.

The problem is that anyone who turns it all off, suddenly becomes suspect. You know, the whole, “what are you hiding” BS. It just shouldn’t be happening at all.

Well, trust is something that must be earned, comes with time, and is build up on history. Tim managed to destroy this in a matter of seconds, and with every new statement, explanation while backing up these surveillance methods, it gets worse.

Cupertino is the new burning Rome 🔥🏛.
So, before this announcement, Apple was trusted with the "scanning" all photos for associations and locations on every iOS device? Are people less trustful of the more limited scenario of Apple "scanning" for images that are identified as child abuse image and, importantly, limited to iCloud photos?

To your point, I, personally, believe that Apple has earned trust for me and that it is clear they have attempted to develop a privacy-centric solution. But more than that, I think their solution allows for easier auditing since it IS happening on device and NOT on the cloud, like every other cloud storage provider.

Also something that always disturbed me, not being able to exclude photos from iCloud Photos. It’s all on or nothing, on purpose.
Very true and good point. That should definitely be an option. I never thought of it before, but I don't want a pic of my ID to be uploaded to iCloud ever, but if I took a picture of it for some purpose, it was uploaded. I know I had to do a lot of things like that 2 years ago when I was in the process of buying a house.

Says someone willing to trade privacy for "security" or in this case justice. An AI is always looking/scanning/hashing your photos - that is the same as having a camera watch your every move. The AI "see's" your photos as do Apple employees when false positives occur. ""It's just an AI filter" is the 2021 version of "its just your finger prints" and "it's "just your DNA"... if you have nothing to hide why do you need privacy?

You don't deserve the privacy you enjoy because you clearly don't value it.

Yeah yeah. Anything is acceptable as long as you’re “thinking of the children” 🙄 That BS needs to be smashed every. single. time. And you know what? Finding these photos on someone’s device, doesn’t mean they are actually abusing children themselves, nor does it stop people from abusing children. That this is some great “protection” of children is rather dubious. You could eliminate cameras from the world, and it wouldn’t change a thing.

There is a huge practical and conceptual difference here. Up till now all the scanning/AI was for the user benefit. It made the phone more useful. This does not specifically benefit the user at all (general societal benefit though). There was also zero information shared off the device, Apple no matter how small and limited has now changed that.

Location Services for photos can be turned off.

Yes to both. I went from trusting Apple and my iPhone photos/iCloud upload, to not trusting them at all based on the announcement. Seems like I shouldn't have ever trusted them at all now, but I can't change that. The ability to report to authorities based on that scanning, changed everything.

If cameras didn’t exist, would child abuse not exist?

If what you say is true, then why fight crime?
• Let's just get rid of Law Enforcement, because it's not going to make any difference.
• Don't put locks on your doors, because the burglars will break them anyway.

Finding these photos on someone’s device, doesn’t mean they are actually abusing children themselves, nor does it stop people from abusing children
People downloading these images, either for a price or for free, are encouraging those who abuse children to provide more material.
By your logic, it shouldn't be illegal to carry a controlled substance with you as long as you don't give it to someone else. But it is!

Especially easier now that they have unified all their products hardware and software with ARM and IOS.
You'd have to be pretty naïve not to believe investing all your secrets in Apple computers, Apple phones, Apple TV, Apple Credit Cards, Apple Music, Apple Cars, Apple Pie, etc. wouldn't eventually going to lead to problems.
