I think someone said "preparing to ship" was when the machines go through their initial "burn in" testing period, so it's been manufactured but not packaged.

I always assumed it goes to preparing to ship then they actually allocate a specific unit to your order.

Yeah, I checked US stores launch day morning and all stores in NY, LA, FL had both. But in the UK, no single store had the Ultra one, so I think they didn't and still don't have any launch day models of the Ultra yet...

I might be wrong, but I think they produce batches of a single config. Let's say thats 100 (for the sake of maths), and 90 are for orders, 8 are may need manual checking/refurb and 2 may go into stock. The 90 customers get their machines shipped out, the manual checks may be fine and go into the stock pool or triage of some kind. If other orders match they may get allocated the stock ones, in the case of a backlog. So 90 people get things as planned, 2+ people may luck out and get bumped up. The non-conforming ones may end up as display models etc.

Those are made up figures, but the principle in production lines hold. Foxconn don't know its your machine, but they will have the numbers to manage batches, and they'll know their percentages of non-conformities etc.

So I was visiting Hawaii, and they had basic M1 Max unit available in store. My online order had it shipping March 23-30 but still said "order processing" and nothing had changed since the day I ordered.

I cancelled online order and picked it up in store. Got it sooner and cheaper (much lower tax rate in Hawaii).

That makes more sense. My guess my upgrade to a 2TB SSD is what delayed mine.
 
If anyone is interested, Best Buy has Base M1 Max ready to ship with delivery for March 23rd and Base M1 Ultra with delivery for April 8th.

Yeah, CTOs will do that unless they’ve already committed to sending some of each variant to local warehouses which is likely what they’ve done for US orders. I ordered within a couple of minutes of stores opening (Ultra 48 with CTO of 2TB SDD) but my order went from “Arrives March 21-22” to “Arrives March 28” then “Arrives Mon March 38” and lately “Arriving Soon”. Tracking with DHL has said “picked up” from Shenzhen since 17th March but I understand that tracking basically doesn’t work until it’s arrived in Europe, which will likely happen in the next couple of days. I’m still hoping it’ll all update suddenly and I’ll get it in the next few days. However, the screen I’m buying is also only expected mid week at the earliest anyway so everything’s in limbo!

Ooh, my tracking just updated and my order is at East Midlands airport! Maybe I’ll get it within the original estimated delivery window of 21st-22nd! 😀

Still no action on my Max 1TB BTO unit, I have two different delivery dates depending wether I check the website (March 29) or the app (April 4-6)
I have a DHL tracking number from the Netherlands but it’s been sitting at “label created” since the 17th 😬

Ours were on the same plane, then. Mine is now at the Bristol Delivery Facility.

Apple's delivery estimates have been all over the place. I've seen all sorts of dates between March 21st - April 5th, including an enigmatic "arriving soon". Current estimate is March 28th, but I'd hope even DHL can manage the last 25 miles in less than one week...

This is exactly how mine has been, same dates seen too. Mine is now in Leeds (30 miles away), so I hope it’ll be here today/tomorrow, which would match the original estimate of 21/22 March.

That's cool!!! It seems they're following more or less the procedure I mentioned right? Yours shipped on 17th via DHL, did it arrive in Eindhoven prior to East Midlands?

Anyway, congrats!! 🙂

🙂 Mine too. This morning it went from East Mids to Heathrow to DHL Reading, to ‘out for delivery’. And as I type this I’ve just had a text from DHL saying it’ll be delivered today !!!
