I spent a month shy of 2 years in a Bolt EUV with CarPlay and almost 4 months ago transitioned to an Equinox EV without CarPlay. At first, the change was uneasy, but now that I'm used to it, no problem. I actually really like that the baked in google nav will estimate my battery percentage upon arrival to my destination and back to my starting point (usually home or work); something CarPlay wasn't able to do in our EUV and I'm not sure how it would have the ability without being baked into the car like the android system. No Apple Music, I signed up for a free Spotify trial but about a week into it learned that my YTPremium membership also has YTMusic, so I quickly transitioned to that and there is a way to import your playlists from Apple Music so no worries there. Now I find myself using google maps more frequently on my phone and listening to YTMusic more frequently on both my phone and my work computer (Mac mini). This blend of Apple and Android/Google isn't as weird as it seemed it would be just a few months ago.

While I have no doubt there are people who would DIY; my guess is the market is too small to be profitable enough to invest money in marketing the product and creating a support system. Dealing with a dealer means you have someone who has the knowledge and equipment to do an instal, and won’t need many calls to help people doing it DIY; plus if it requires any coding tehy will have the required systems, unlike an individual.

In the end, it may just not be profitable and teh dealer was a beta test to see if it was a viable product.

Looks like it included a "fw hack" to tell the vehicle to reenable the missing apps. They probably swapped some modules with the ones from the prologue as well.

At worst it just means now you can't just apply OTA updates as they could reset what the vehicle believes is installed.

I love people defending GM here. Why would it be a deciding factor for a car purchase that's dumb.....

Are you serious? You want a subscription for a car? You are paying for an esim for a car that is recording and selling your data for profit and you are paying for it.

Guess what I already pay for cell service. I already pay for a music subscription. I just want to play the sound through the car it isn't hard. I don't need another cell plan just for my car.

This just blows my mind. If Dell tomorrow said you had to pay for a cell plan to use their computers no other connectivity people would be dumb enough to go well it's a better experience. Maybe buy a TV with cellular connectivity and no HDMI/WIFI/Etc.

This is solving a problem that doesn't exist except for a small handful of people. Sure if you have no cell phone and are still rocking a landline sure great option. However, if someone in this day and age doesn't own a smart phone plan do you think they are going to splurge and pay for a data only plan for their car?

Yea, I suspected that probably was the case.

I can see why GM was concerned about the potential to stop OTA updates. If they needed to fix a bug some cars might not get the fix, potentially causing a safety issue.

I don’t see it as defending GM as much as explaining their preferences. Personally, if I was choosing between 2 cars and one had CarPlay and the other didn’t I go for the one with CarPlay.

I retrofitted it to my MB and am in the process of putting it and backup cams on my 84 635CSi and an older Malibu. I find it far better than my magnetic dash mounts.

i think it is Tesla.
but EVs are expensive unless you have free charging at work.
charging is expensive compared to Gasoline.
Really depends.. Last year i drove my M3LR 28K miles... And between home and paid charging i spent $1195 on charging total. If your car gets 30 Miles per gallon and you only paid 3.75/ gallon that would be $3499. you would almost have to be getting fuel at 1 dollar per gallon or 90MPG to have the same cost per mile as i did. Add in Oil Changes and other maintenance its very likely higher. You are correct.. Its Telsa.. And the other legacy folks are not even close.

I have yet to find an example of charging being more expensive than gas

Like i said you would have to be buying at about a dollar a gallon or have a gas car getting about 90/MPG to be more efficient or cost effective. Not going to say it's impossible.. But highly improbable. The only place you are going to do better is tires... LOL and thats why i love my EV... She screams!!!!! Just very quietly.

Seems maybe the "depends" part was you trying to be diplomatic to the disinformation you were responding to.

I applaud the diplomacy. ;)
Thanks... Just surprised i was not torched because i talked about the EV i own.. LOL Thankfully i have not taken any keys or carts yet... Come on people... Can we go back to hating each other... Without hating anyone who has ever done business with someone we hate? Even if that business was conducted back in a time when everyone loved the person they now hate.. Its just getting to confusing. I wake up everyday confused as to who i am supposed to support and who i am supposed to hate today.. Lets go back to loving everyone...

Meanwhile, my reliable Subaru Impreza has full CarPlay support. Oh and Subaru's cars are cheaper and better in every way compared to GMs overpriced low quality cars.

That may be true in the gas versions, though GM’s gas cars also support CarPlay. It is the GM EVs that don’t (except for the ones that do). With that one major flaw, I do feel that GM’s EVs are better than the second hand Toyota that Subaru sells as an EV. I wonder when Subaru will get serious about EVs?

Subaru's consumer automotive side is fairly small, so it is likely they are going to partner with someone else to "share the costs". I'd expect them to hybridize more of their line before going full BEV. I think the overlander folks that tend to buy Subbies would be more receptive as well.
