I have a Gmail account set up on my iPhone 7 plus and when I delete messages from it , they are also deleted form the main Gmail amount. Is there a way to delete only from the iPhone.

Ian

No. Why’d you delete something if you wanna keep it anyway? I don’t get this use case.

Gmail can be set in the native iOS app to archive "deleted" emails rather than deleting them. Not sure whether that's helpful, but I think that's your only other alternative.

I'm confused. You want to delete Gmail emails from your account only on your iPhone but not main Gmail account? What does this even mean? Your account is your account. The iPhone app is just a means of accessing your account.

I also have a Gmail account. I don't use the Mail app. I use the Gmail application. This is probably a better than running imap or pop to the mail app. Then you can archive and do whatever you want. Deleting individual mail items on your phone only while keeping them in gmail is extremely tedious work for basically no gain.

OP wants to treat Gmail in the iOS Mail app as if it were POP.

AFAIK, it's only IMAP.

You aren't deleting messages in the app, you're deleting them from (your) Gmail (account). Gmail is a "cloud" based service.
[doublepost=1513272433][/doublepost]Turns out you can configure the email client/app as POP although I'm 99% certain this can't be done with the official Gmail app. You also have to go the web-side and enable POP.

If you don't want to keep old mail on the iPhone just set the number of days to sync to a shorter period like one week or one day. No reason to delete from the phone only.

Same.

OP, I prefer the Gmail app, especially since I can easily toggle between multiple gmail accounts. It’s very much like being in Gmail on your computer.

I agree with others who suggest just using the Gmail app. You might also want to try Google's Inbox app. The original Gmail app functions much like the traditional Gmail interface, and the Inbox app more like the newer Inbox interface you may have seen in the browser. My only gripe about Inbox is that you can't mark messages as unread if you want to come back to them later, but you can "snooze" them. Despite that, I find myself using Inbox more these days. Same email, but just a different interface. I can find messages easily in either app, but Inbox seems to be pretty intelligent about making it easy to see the messages I'm most interested in.

If you're a Gmail user, I just don't see much reason to use the native iOS mail app unless you just really like the interface or you need an Apple Watch app. There are third party mail apps that offer watch apps and support for Gmail though.

OK thanks for all the input, I gather from the above threads I must have been assuming something that is not true. I was under the understanding that the messages inGmail on the iPhone were taking up data space, and if I could delete messages I would for up storage but if the iPhone is just accessing the Gmail server (on the cloud as one mentioned) then I guess I am OK. If this is so then thanks for straightening me out, appreciated.

local mails downloaded from the google server do actually take up data space but that's a matter of few kilobytes
