Gmail, archive instead of delete in Mail.app with imap

So I have gmail set up to use imap and everything works perfectly on my iPhone. When I chose delete on my iPhone it works like hitting archive on gmail's site. When I hit delete in Mail.app it creates a "Deleted Messages" label in gmail and applies it to the message. I also have the option of mapping the Trash label to the trash in mail.app. What I really want is for an email to become archived when I hit delete in Mail.app like it does on my iPhone.

Also, how come I can read mail on my iphone (or the website) and when I look in Mail.app it still says unread? Isn't the point of imap that my mail is synced everywhere?

That's bizarre, I have the opposite problem, on my iPhone when you hit delete it vaporizes the email forever, disappears on the gmail server. When I hit delete in mail.app, it archives the mail to 'all mail' as I want it to (expected behavior). What are your settings on your iPhone that you're able to 'archive' the mail by deleting? I'd be highly interested. 🙂
