You can setup gmail (via the website) to forward new emails to your gmail account over to another account (like your new @icloud address). If you do that, then you wouldn't have to check your gmail account separately while you are telling everyone about your new @icloud address. And if you're looking to copy your old gmail emails over to iCloud, then follow ugahairydawgs' suggestion. 🙂
