Is there a desktop client that emulates gmail's threaded view on OX X? I tried Mailbox, Mail.app, and Thunderbird - none of them worked.
 
Mail app does threaded messages. Instead of clicking the original message on the gmail web client to see the threads, you click the drop down arrow in Mail app to see the threads.

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I was hoping for a comprehensive threaded view (with both sent & received message) that more closely resembles gmail's version.
 
Gmail's the only thing that does what you want, unfortunately.

that's disappointing. Since gmail could implement it on ajax, I was sure that there is an application out there - somewhere - that could at least match gmail's prowess.

Anyways, I'd be willing to use Outlook or some other windows client if need be. I heard Outlook can do that - can anyone confirm?
 
Gmail's the only thing that does what you want, unfortunately.

There is a way to show sent and received messages threaded together in Mail. You can set up a Smart Mailbox to show both together:
