Just so everyone can stop being confused. There is a big difference between IMAP gmail and activesync/exchange/googlesync.

Here is the forum post where people are bitching about it:

Here is the post complaining about the picture being downsized with activesync/exchange/googlesync:

Either way ... the only way for me to move my gmail email and contacts over to iCloud is to bring them to my windows pc using outlook 2010 and then sync them with the iCloud connector or something?

Also does anyone know how to make iCloud email do threaded messaging ... or does it not do that like the iPhone does?

FYI activesync is exchange/google sync.

Exactly it takes two steps to delete. Who the hell is going to delete something twice every single time you delete something that's retarded. I get way too much email to do that.

There are massive forums posts complaining about these two problems in google's forum.

I think I need to install outlook to sync with iCloud on windows. I don't think iCloud supports windows address book.

This function is for IMAP ... NOT activesync/googlesync/exchange!

Doh! You are right! The way I have my google setup on my phone is I use exchange/activesync only for my calendar and contacts which is PUSH. Then I add IMAP for gmail only since I don't want that to be push as I check it manually. Sorry for the confusion.

Yea that's how I have mine setup right now because I have too not because I want too.

I would much rather have push for email and be able to delete a message and have it go in the trash. It would be fine if gmail supported imap idle with push like iCloud does and yahoo mail does.

Interesting. I even tried on my gmail IMAP moving it to the "Trash Can" and it still just took the label off and showed up in All Mail.

Looks like I will just have to clean up my all mail from time to time and trash the ones that don't have a label.

Thanks - tried that, but there is no longer a "Archive Messages" option in iOS5.. at least not on my iPad2. Exchange and IMAP work the same for me with iOS5.

Yes I haven't tried it on iOS 5 yet. Why does GMail have to be dense and make everything Archive? This is stupid. There will come a time when your mailbox is full.

Yeah.. It has its benefits for me, as my work requires me to save all emails on my exchange account and archive works great. Luckily I have 25GB of storage since it is google apps.

The personal Gmail doesn't get too full, so I can make time to clear it out if necessary.

But you are right.. it is tedious to delete twice. Worked flawlessly on my Evo since I could "Archive" or "Delete" lol.. I am starting to see Android advantages before I get my 4S.

Go to Settings --> Mail --> Gmail account --> Turn Archive Messege to OFF.
Now you can delete all the emails you want.

Yeah, someone finally told me how to delete an email from my Gmal inbox on iPhone forever without it getting archived! Thank you very much. Now if I could only figurre out why I need Gmail and Google Sync (Exchange?) on my phone. I am not sure why I did this. I think to synch my Google calendars with my phone? It's been awhile and I forgot. In the meantime, for every one email I get, it shows up in the badge as two. Oh well, baby steps.

There are really two different topics being discussed here, which should probably be split into two threads: 1) The email aspects of Gmail vs an iCloud xxx@me.com email, and 2) Migrating Contacts from Gmail to iCloud (and the pros/cons of that).

I never really made use of my Gmail account for email, as I had already had a long-established Hotmail account and later an email account associated with a website that I host. But I was using Gmail for syncing Contacts and Calendars on my iPhone. Like the OP (and some others here), I'd kind of like to cut the cord on Google. I trust Apple more, plus I'm getting more and more entrenched in the Apple ecosystem and it just seems like things might be supported a bit better if I synced my Contacts with iCloud vs Google.

Like the OP, I tried turning on iCloud syncing, but it doesn't automatically push those Google Contacts out to iCloud. And if I turn off Google Contact syncing, it doesn't seem to give me the option of leaving the Contacts behind on my iPhone.

Another thing I've run into is Siri support. I want to add a bunch of relationships to my Contact entry (for my father, brother, daughter, etc.) and the Relationships fields don't show up on the Google-stored Contact entry I have for myself. Instead I have only work-oriented fields like "Manager" and "Assistant".

FWIW, my laptop is a Windows 7 machine, and while I do have Outlook 2007 on it, I use that for my work email and prefer to keep my personal email contained within Windows Live Mail. The iCloud Windows Control Panel plug-in doesn't support Windows Live Mail, only Outlook 2007/2010. I can probably live without being able to edit my Contacts within Windows Live Mail, but it still leaves me stuck in terms of how do I go about exporting the Google Contacts into iCloud.

I'm about to switch over from an Android phone to an iPhone... so I'm thinking about moving over to my new @me.com address and such too. As for contacts I used the OSX's address book and have it sync'd to iCloud... based on reading the whole thread you've determined that you'll just need to sync yours to outlook contacts.

And I think iCloud's email account is visually the same to iOS' email client.
