For a company whose bread and butter used to be search, the quality has gone way downhill. Might end up being a wash. Some results will be better; some a lot worse.

The search function in the Mac/iOS Apple Mail app is terrible—I always switch to Gmail when I need to find something. So this is a welcome update for me!

Really? The previous company I worked for uses Google too (the "enterprise" suite version), but I quickly went back to the Apple Mail app (on Mac) because Spotlight could find my all the relevant emails better than the online Gmail client did. In fact, I used to work in Microsoft's Entourage up to 2012, the only Microsoft software that was way better than Outlook. But as Microsoft always does... they cancel good software in favour of crippled software that needs 24/7 paid support.

Still use Apple Mail app, now with MS Office 365 cloud services as my current (US) employer still is hooked to the Microsoft fairy tale.

Sorry but search in Gmail has never worked for me. it shows me emails from 10 years ago and not recent ones. I have no idea how it's suppose to work

Here in Apple land on MacOS I get random "Top Hits" with the same emails showing again in the list below.

The "top hits" rarely turn out to contain the mail I'm actually looking for.

Google is rolling out an improved Gmail search function powered by AI that the company reckons will "show you the most relevant results, faster."

Search in Gmail has traditionally returned results from your inbox in chronological order based on keywords. That's not great if the email you need was sent months or years ago.

What the new method does to improve things is factor in elements like how often you contact someone, which emails you've clicked the most, and how recently the emails arrived in your inbox.

"With this update, the emails you're looking for are far more likely to be at the top of your search results — saving you valuable time and helping you find important information more easily," claims Google.

The new "most relevant" search results are rolling out globally for users with personal Google accounts, and are accessible on the web and in the official Gmail app for iOS and Android. If it's appearing for you already, you'll be able to toggle between "most relevant" and "most recent" results. Google says it will expand the new feature to business users in the future.

Love how they feature the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra in this ;)

Took years for a web search company to allow basic search in their product! I genuinely believe any business that uses Google Suite is not serious about their business's efficiency.
Neither are those that use Microsoft's horrifying tools, with the most absurd bugs being introduced with each release.
To be honest, they are all pretty bad!
It's insane that those companies can't improve their products, with all the budget they have.

I agree, and the most ridiculous thing in case with Google is they run their own business on a different edition than what they sell to their customers.
