Haha--yeah--unfortunately computer free is more accurately stated as Internet-free--so no computer, iPad or iPhone. Not something I would want to do--but I'm sure many of us would do fine with just our iPhones and iPads for a month. :D

I don't think you gain anything by doing this. If you're addicted to technology, start by not bringing your device to the dinner table. Go take a walk outside and get some fresh air for 30 minutes. Go do something interesting and fun, even if it's just going to the mall.

My parents used to say that I was addicted to using computers. They've been a part of my life for 23 years now. But once you look at the bigger picture - That now people can't get enough Facebook, that kids are addicted to playing mobile games (which was never a real issue when we had the Gameboy), and that so many people have to keep up with status updates all day long, the fact that I just use a computer isn't a big deal.

If I can give you one suggestion, it's to get rid of the social networking. Get rid of Facebook and Twitter, and leave that for your computer. Text messaging is okay, but you should really learn to use Do Not Disturb and put limits on when are good times for you to check them.

Make your devices less distracting, and you will be better off.

I do feel I could do without my rMBP and save $2000 if the iPad had solid multitasking. But I can't do web design work or even school work anywhere as efficiently on an iPad. I believe in 5-10 years we won't need dedicated computers but for now they have become superior devices as a result of tablets and smartphones.

That's like saying to someone in the 1960's "try going without a telephone for 30 days". Of course they easily would have been able to, but what would have been the point?

Can we easily go without our devices for 30 days? The point of such an experiment could be to find out.

And by the way, the appropriate analogy for the sixties would have been, "try going without a joint for 30 days" just to clarify the historical record and so on etc. :)

Perhaps referencing joints is relevant, as it seems our devices have a drug like appeal for many of us. They are very stimulating, don't you think? Conceptually, there may seem to be a big difference between drugs and devices, but I'm not sure the brain makes such a clear distinction. To the brain, stimulation may be stimulation, whatever the source.

Everybody is different of course, and devices are not used as drugs by many people. To find out what our relationship with devices really is, we could try going without them for a month.

Well I mean, YOU could try going without them for a month. Don't get any big ideas about dragging me in to this, because I can stop typing any time I want to. That's right mister, I could go cold turkey right now. I don't have to type another single word. I could just walk away and never look back.

And not only that, another thing before I forget, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, etc ad naseum ad infinitum.

It is impossible for me. I survived for a week, but I was getting edgy by the last day.

It's possible that the devices in our hands, more specifically our relationship with them, could help us learn a good bit about the device between our ears.

If we get edgy without our devices, why is that?

My computer is far more useful than an iPad. I need a computer due to learning disabilities and for me the computer is far better for me.

One business trip, I forgot my MacBook when packing the car. I managed to do everything over the next few days only using my iPad but it isn't something I'd want to do often. Using VPN, I was able to get to files but I still found it hard to work on Excel files in Numbers. Email worked well.

How do you do it? Been TV free for 6 months now. Every time I go to a friends house with DirecTV makes me want to sign up again.

4 years for me me. YouTube is my TV. My subscriptions upload 20 min videos daily plus I can watch them at any time so that's another advantage.

No way.. I use my iMac for tons of stuff. I sell lots on amazon and ebay, and I need my computer for that. I spend 7 hours a day at work on the computer and around 2-3 hours at home for my own little business. I could never drop either.

I was without my MacBook Pro for a 24 hour period while it was at the Apple Store for repair and barely made it. The iPad is not a replacement for a real computer.

I agree. The only way I would be able to "make it" was if I had other things to do. Like reading a book, watching a long movie, or cooking or something. I would just avoid the technology for the time it was away :p
