Thanks!

Very cool, and nice to see some good/real/HQ carbon :) A buddy of mine does some fabrication for the sailing industry and I’ve had some fairly high quality carbon products for my cars.

I’ve got a nice CF cigar case (holds 4), not sure of the weave density, but a really nice piece.

Er, mind divulging your source? PM if so, if not, no biggie, I understand wanting something unique and exclusive :)

Not fussed at all.......

It was from a Hong Kong seller on eBay who has a store over here in the UK. Cost me £30, but it is solid carbon fibre and not some fake plastic made to look like carbon.
Nicely finished too so you don't get any flash lines on the sides (like you do with plastic) that dig into your hands when you're holding the iPad......and it works perfectly with the Smart Cover:)

Nice find. There’s such a wide range of CF quality (not to mention fake finishes like Hydrographic) I always feel like ordering is a crap shoot.

Thanks again!

No worries.....

I spend so much time training or racing on a 3K weave bike that the one thing I really wanted was a carbon case for my iPad. I got a cheap gel case just to start and then went Googling for some proper carbon fibre.

My iPad is my movie console when I'm sitting out in the garage on my aero bike doing 1 to 2 hour turbo training sessions (got down to -4 C out there this winter!), and even 2 hours of LOTR doesn't generate any worrying heat from the thing.

As far as the weight ...

Oh boy do I ever agree with u there

It's significantly heavier and noticeable.

Let's hope battery tech improves soon

Yeah now you need a wheel barrel to carry the new iPad it's just so freaking heavy. I use mine to bake bread too. JEEZ!

No way the display is even close to being the same between iPad 2 and 3rd gen. Anyone that says that really needs an eye exam.

I agree reading text on new iPad is night and day difference compared to iPad 2. Went to Engadget site and all zoomed out I can still tell the quality difference. Reminds me of the time when I upgraded to the iPhone 4 from the 3GS. I can not undo my eyes. That and the $100 difference in savings is questionable, not worth the savings at all IMO.

I just realised something, in all the time ive had the iPad 3 I dont think Ive ever had to zoom into anything. Even the tiniest of text is readable. Ive read every webpage in portrait and I could never really do that with iPad 2, either it was zoomed portrait or scrollathon landscape.

I don't think I could do it. I'm spoiled by the retina display. Like a poster said above, I rarely even have to zoom into things. I'm glad I sold my 2 and paid the difference for just the screen upgrade.... I don't use this much as a camera and only got the WiFi, but the Retina display makes a huge difference to me.

Go get your eyes checked. My retina display on my iPad still blows my mind.

People whining about how its so heavy.

Put your tablet down and get some exercise.

Its still lighter then the original iPad 1.

You're right the difference is negligible, but when you spend so much time with any particular iPad you really do notice the difference when you play with another. Of course heavier mean just that, heavier, noticeable but not heavy. Even the slimness. I never would have thought I could physically feel 0.6mm but I definitely can. The weight is more noticable than the width. Its not a complaint, just something you notice. iPad 2 is still a miracle of engineering. Apple really out did themselves on that one.

I was never a fan of the original. It was to my mind very much a big iPod Touch but I deffinitely felt iPad 2 was a real computer.

I have to say to all of you guys wowed over the iPad 3, it is in no way even a fraction faster than iPad 2. Except for the retina screen the performance is exactly the same. I felt the iPad 2 in terms of CPU & GPU power was a monumental improvement over the original. iPad 3 is just a thicker, heavier, warmer iPad 2 with a ground breaking, stunning retina screen. I know a lot of people skipped the iPad 2 saying it wasnt much of an improvement over the original but boy was it ever. I tend to avoid the first gen Apple products as they have a kinda prototypy feel to them.

I'm sorry, I just don't buy that you can physically feel the .06 mm difference in thickness on the new iPad. Maybe you're feeling the slightly different shape of the back, but there's no way you feel that width change. Have you looked at .06 mm on a ruler? It's like the width of a hair.

It feels different. Definitely different. It's not hugely noticeable but like I said after prolonged use of one device and the other you can tell there is a difference and that difference very exaggerated at first, then you don't notice it so much.

A friend in Japan grabbed my iPad 3 and put it face down on his IPad 2 and absolutely could not detect the thickness difference. Same for the mass difference.

Some real hothouse flowers on this site...

I am so spoiled by having my iPad 3 for only one day, that I can't imagine looking at the non Retina display iPad 2. It is a huge difference to me

The weight difference is pretty noticable IMO... but I can't give up the screen. If I had bad eyes, then maybe I would consider an iPad 2 instead.

Hi folks,

I didn't want to start a new threat so I'm here. Here is my question :

A friend of mine is selling his iPad 2 3G 32 Gb with his current data plan until june (which he'll keep on paying for the buyer, as a gift ;-)) for 350 Swiss francs (about 380 USD).

I used for a few days my Dad's iPad 3, which is really great (what a screen !) and it makes me think buying one for myself, this could be the right moment to do so.

The question is : "old" iPad 2 3G 32 Go for 380 bucks or a new iPad 3 Wifi only 16 Go ? (the price is not the same, but I really don't need 3G as I can hotspot wifi from my Nexus S when I'm not in range from a Wifi) ?

Thank's guys, see you !

PS : last point that I forgot to mention : I already own a MBA 11'' 2011 as my primary machine, does it make sense to buy an iPad too ? Are these two machines not too close to have both ?
I'm an engineering student so the iPad would be mainly to watch movies, surf on the internet and e-mailing, not to actually "work". Except maybe some PDF and e-books for courses.

I shifted from iPad 1 to iPad3, and now I think iPad 1 is rubish, I love how crispy fonts look on it!

There are some areas where having an iPad and an Air is nice. I have an Air and am looking at getting an iPad.

The air is nice and awesome for those times I'm going to be doing a lot of typing, but the iPad is better for quick notes, reading etc

I'm getting the iPad primarily as a device to do bible studies, reading various sources and using OneNote for notes.

Anyone who thinks any iPad is heavy, must be the weakest people in life. People would carry around their laptops at school, and I never heard anyone saying " O MY GOD....THIS LAPTOP IS SO HEAVY, HOW CAN I GO ON "

I still even think the ipad one is extremely light and I didn't see anyone complaining about it being to heavy when it first came out. Before that we never had a tablet that was this thin ever. But people forget that.

I bet one day people will complain that the iPad is too heavy when its as thin as paper.
People are just way to spoiled.

I think people complaint about how heavy the iPad is when holding it with one hand, let's say you are reading in a bus, perhaps holding the iPad for 5 mins doesn't feel so heavy but what about 30 mins or more?, a laptop at least has a support for the screen that you can lie on your legs but iPad doesn't.

Well then they should use a laptop then. Or use two hands. I see many people on the train with books and most would be too heavy to read after 30 minutes on one hand.

So what do they do?......They switch to the other hand...or put their knees up and read off their legs.

People are complaining about a device that's ahead of its time. To pack this technology in a tablet and still have it as thin as it is now, is still amazing.

Before this..really....what did you use? A Blackberry? A Moto Razer? Sharp Zaurus?

That wasn't that long ago.....but we still get people that can't see how good they have it.

I honestly don't understand the issue with the weight. I read for hours on my iPad and don't notice the weight at all. Why? Because I don't hold the damn thing. I prop it up on something using the smart cover or whatever other case I'm using. If I had to support the entire weight of the iPad with my own arms, then heck yeah it'd be too heavy. But so would the iPad 2 ... and even the iPad 2 with a few ounces shaved off of it.

It's not a paperback book, so just adjust the way you hold the device and you won't have any issues.
