I was using 80gb out of 256gb on my XS Max. But that dates pictures and a lot of random videos from the past 3-4 years.

if I’m conscience of what I record and put on my phone 64gb should be ok. I don’t play games or have a ton of apps. Just pics and videos of my kids and our vacations etc.

Does the introduction of ios13 and file management capabilities make 64gb viable these days? I’ll be transferring a lot of my old stuff onto an external drive to save memory and will do so periodically.

What’s everyone’s thoughts?

I pay the £1.99 a month for 200GB of iCloud storage and keep all my photos on there. I only use ~35GB on my 64GB iPhone. My photo library isn’t absolutely huge at around 10,000, but having them in iCloud makes it really convenient to have a smaller GB phone, plus I can see all photos on all devices.

iOS 13 file management is only relevant to iPad Pro for the time being, given the fact that they support USB-C port. If iPhone supports USB-C, file management will make sense. So, as of now, you might still need to get 256GB option.

I am currently on that iCloud plan as well. What happens when I erase my old phone? I’ll be setting up my new phone as new because I can’t restore a backup thats more than the device storage.

Will those photos be gone if I synced my new 64gb phone to iCloud?

I went from the 256 XS to a 64 Pro as well. I was using about 72GB on the XS and was easily able to eliminate more than half of that through locally stored music alone.

Will the Apple USB 3 camera connection kit not work with the iPhone?

If you’re using iCloud Photo Library, they’ll all be there if you sign in with iCloud on your new phone.

It might work but you need external power supply to work with camera connection kit and a variety Of USB devices. Not ideal. There are lightning-based thumb drives that does Not need external power supply, but they are not very easy to use and works only for taking photos and videos.

Ah that makes sense. Excellent!
Do keep in mind that even with optimised storage option on, you are still looking at 1GB per 2000 photos or so just for thumbnails, and you cannot offload this part of storage. So, if you have a very big number of photos, 64GB may still not be enough.

I went from 256 to 64 too; no problems so far! I try to just save the best photos and not let them pile up too much.

I went froma 256gb X to a 64gb 11 Pro Max. I use the cloud for music and pics. I don't foresee a problem.

I would do 256 for resale value and also I believe the new cameras take up more space than previous generations

I went from a 16gb 6 to 256gb 7+ and now 256 XS Max. I’ll probably never get anything less. I like the ability to have tons of pictures, videos and songs without having to micromanage everything again. The price for me is worth the peace of mind.

This is absolutely okay! I went from 128GB with my iPhone 7 to 64GB with the iPhone X. I never managed to fill the storage on that so I've went with 64GB ever since. Buying extra storage on iCloud really helps, and streaming all your music does too! I like having less storage as it keeps me on top of clutter and stops me filling my phone up with wasteful apps. I install games I'm currently playing then once I'm done I offload them. If I ever want them back I can just click the icon and redownload the app with all my save data still intact. :)

I also went from a 256gb X to a 64gb pro max. Im hoping icloud for pics will save me in this area however ive noticed having photo/videos captured outside the frame takes up a lot of memory (although they are deleted after 30 days)

That's correct. I have Apple Music and do download playlist I like so I do have about 5-6 gigs of music locally stored on my phone. But I was only using 30gb out of 256 on my X which is the main reason I downgraded storage.
