Ironically, the Galaxy S family has virtual surround sound when listening to music or watching movies using Samsungs' application. ;)

Because as any audiophile will attest, virtual surround sound through headphones/earbuds is just as good as actual surround sound provided by a quality speaker system with subwoofer.

Hello,

Im new here, but I had a IP4 for a few months (august and part of july) like the OP.
I switched it for a SGS + some money I needed. What I really miss is the iphone 4 steel border look, it was really neat. The SGS looks like a 3GS tho, altough the plastic seems higher grade to me (higher fingerprint magnet grade too rofl), quite often some people told me 'hey you're back with your old phone? did you break your iphone 4 ?" and I went "lol no it's some android stuff i'm trying out".
I still think the IP4 cosmetic finish is far superior, but the SGS is well above "OK" too.

To sum it up. + is pro - con
Stock international galaxy S :
+ Gorgeous screen, the color density (even tho far from the real gammut) make me feel happy every morning, I don't really see a difference with the retina unless I get the phone really close to my eyes, except maybe in the web browser with lilliputian fonts.
+ Screen size obviously, I have rather large hands so it was really a big pro for me, I had much less trouble typing accuratly. Swype is kind of meh, I think it takes some training to type faster with it, training which I don't want to do, however if I have only one free hand swype is really nice.
+ I don't know about you but I loved the samsung media/music player thing, very well done.
+ The godamn drag notification bar and multitasking.
+ Very smooth on 2.1 I didn't try the 2.2 leaked yet.

-/+ GPS issue is there sometimes, for example if you're surrounded by tall buildings it fails, however it works fine once you are driving in open space. I have read on android forums that the issue was already fixed in the very last leaked firmware.

-/+ Copy paste was pure ****, however installing the app "copy paste it" improved the copy paste function over the IP4's one, basically you just draw a square and it copies to clipboard anything that's in it !

-/+ The apps on the market are often ******, but overall if you dig a bit more you can find very good apps that are free. For 10 ****** apps there's always one (often not advertised or featured) that is godly, it takes a lot more time to find the good app than on the app store, however I liked the 24 hour easy app refund if you didn't like an app. Overall I found a good clone of about any iphone app I was using, except for some games like angry birds, which I hope is coming out soon.

+ This brings me to gaming, the SGS is a beast for it, technically speaking the gpu of the sgs is about three time faster than the IP4, however games that are iphone ports are for the moment better optimized on their native device.

- Kies (the itune thing of samsung) is BS. Hopefully I don't need it for anything except firmware upgrades.

- I tried to look on the web for leather cases and stuff for the SGS and man it's like being teleported from a huge mart to your local little grocery store. Much much less choice.

- I had a bit of a hassle to get my protected oldest musics out of itunes with a third party software but I managed to find a free one.

-/+ Touchwizz was quite nice for the transition to android, but it is really lacking compared to iOS, kind of a cheap clone, stock wallpaper and theme looks ugly. However touchwizz looks kind of cool if you find a livewallpapper you like. But that didn't cut it for me, I wanted more. That's why I searched a bit on some android forums and I found an app called Launcher pro to erase touchwiz and gadgets (switchpro, SMS unread count, and another called desktop visualizer that allows to make your own icons out of any image). I'll post a screenshot.

That's all, overall I'm pretty happy with android at the moment, but only because I can customize it at my own will. I really like about android the fact that it is "your phone" not just the very same as your coworker next door with just a different wallpaper. If someday an app similar to launcher pro comes out on the iphone, be sure I'll be back within the hour.

As promised a screenshot of what my desktop looks like (this is the screen of the theme I took inspiration of, it's maker kindly told me how to reproduce a similar layout), I just love the fact I didn't even need to jailbreak the phone to do that. Sorry if my english was sub-par. It's not my native language.

i really really really hate reviving dead threads but i was wondering if anybody ever made the change back to iphone or vice versa. I realize that there is always a "honey moon" period with phones. I've been reading COUNTLESS vs articles and watching comparison videos but im still a bit stuck. i know im gonna get biased opinions here but i figured i rather do it here because im a big mac user. so please, to the people who either switched to the captivate or switched back from the captivate, help a fellow macrumor out. ! :p

I've been using a Nexus One for a while now and while it's a very decent product but i still find myself yearning for my iPhone more often than not. Less steps to execute actions, copy/paste works miles better, iTunes integration is missed, app store interface and app quality is slightly better, combined email inbox, battery life is superior and there are no messaging limits (big one for me).

So i shall be fetching my iPhone 4 from the drawer soon, and placing the N1 in it's stead. However, i'm waiting to try out Gingerbread first before a final decision.

my friend has used the iphone since the original came out, then she emigrated to america due to her husband and due to him being on verizon, cheaper to get a second line, plus at&t is crap where they're living and she got the samsung galaxy or whatever they called it on verizon, she liked it at first, but after 3 months she's wanting to go back on the iPhone as she said the samsung just isn't as good as the iPhone.

Friend of mine here at the office bought the new Samsung Captivate (4" amoled) and is loving it. (I played with it too and it's very sweet).

Very envious of that large beautiful display.

they are both equally good phones offered on at&T

the choice is really between which OS you like both phones can pretty much do anything you want them to do

While I praise both Android and iOS for their successful apps and UI, I would not buy samsung Galaxy S ever.

I will buy Droid phones or Evo 4G. Samsung is absolutely worst companies in history with updating with Android OS. GPS is almost useless on every galaxy phones and some of them are even missing key hardware features like flash or front facing Camera. I maybe am willing to overlook some hardware omissions, but I am not going to choose a company like LG or Samsung who take forever to update their flagships phones. Galaxy S is a good phone, but samsung has done absolutely terrible job with updating OS. It was suppose to come out with 2.2 by September, and now it's almost 2011. Maybe some users don't care about having the latest OS like 2.3 ginger bread. The difference in speed between Eclair and Ginger bread is very noticeable.

I was an original iPhone owner from launch date in 2007. Since then I had ventured off into other smart phone choices. My most recent was the use of the Samsung Captivate for AT&T. I, in fact, do like Android, but Samsung support is awful. This is where the market fragmentation comes in to play. Samsung updated Europe and Asian devices, while leaving US customers behind. Completely laggy and GPS was unusable.

Coming back to the iWorld feels like coming home. iPhone 4 is amazing.

I've had a 3G and 3GS in the past and decided to move away from the iPhone since Apple in their stupidity designed a phone made out of glass with external antennas. I have owned a Samsung Captivate since its launch date. Let me tell you that the Captivate is a piece of crap and is not an iPhone substitute.

The Craptivate randomly shuts down, randomly gets laggy, randomly eats battery power, the GPS is non-functional for the most part, and Samsung support is nonexistant. The only good thing about the phone is the 4" superAMOLED screen which admittedly is gorgeous with its deep blacks. The widescreen format is also better for watching media than the iPhone's 4:3 aspect ratio.

Samsung released the phone worldwide with a non-functional GPS and for the most part have ignored fixing it. They've been promising Froyo for months and still haven't delivered when most other manufacturers have. If you really want an Android phone I suggest looking to HTC or Motorola and STEER CLEAR of Samsung. Personally, I will never buy another Samsung product. Do some research and you will see that they have a history of not supporting their phones.

As for Android, it's an incomplete OS. Sure you can use different keyboards, customize features, etc. but what's the use when all of the apps don't work well? For example, SWYPE works decent for one handed texting but it sucks overall as a keyboard and doesn't come close iOS' keyboard. Stock Android keyboard is horrible as well. Handcent text app is just a buggy copy of iOS' text app. GMail app sucks if you hate email threading and has issues displaying HTML correctly. I could go on and on. Android just feels like a poor man's version of iOS. The only thing I really enjoy in Android is the use of widgets and the ability to access Flash sites.

Android is for people that enjoy tinkering with their phone. I don't want or need to tinker with my phone. I just want the thing to work when I need it. I might give WP7 or webOS a try (depending on what is introduced at CES) before going back to iOS but my foray into Android is done.
