Like the title says. If my computer is open, even if the messages app is closed, when I receive a text I don't get a notification on my phone and the screen doesn't light up. But if I wake the screen I'll show the bade alert for the text.

My messages sync between both devices obviously, which I'd prefer to continue doing, but not if it means this has to happen.

I did some searches and found people with vaguely similar problems, and a few with what sounds like the same problem, but no real solutions, and the threads are older.

Any advice? Thanks!

Try removing your computer from text message forwarding?

Settings>messages>text message forwarding>(flick the switch off for your Mac)

Does it eventually alert your phone? If I have my MacBook open and awake my texts will first notify there but if I don’t click on Messages it will alert my phone within 10-20 seconds or so.

It seems that iCloud can identify which device you're actively using. Between my Macs, iPhone and iPad, whichever one I'm working with will show the alert first, and the others will follow in 20 seconds or so.

If you're using your phone and your computer is still going off first, or you're not getting the notifications elsewhere after that delay, something could be glitched. Try the usual steps of signing out and back in, turning services off/on, etc.

Why get the same notification on multiple devices if it's already apparent that you're using/looking at one of those devices?

This is a designed/known behavior for Apple Watch - if your iPhone is unlocked you won't see the same notification on the Watch (and vice versa). https://support.apple.com/HT204791

One person's "drive me crazy" is another person's "that's cool" (and vice versa). When I'm sitting at my Mac with my iPhone and iPad nearby, and my Watch on my wrist... I don't want to get bombarded with redundant notifications on four devices.

Another example of this is the Attention Awareness features of Face ID-equipped iPhones and iPads. If there's an incoming phone call and I immediately look at my phone, the ringer silences automatically, even before I answer the call. To me, that's great. The ringtone got my attention; the noise is no longer necessary. Others complain bitterly that the phone does this - they expect to hear the ringer until they actual answer the call. The way I see it, since we may spend a few seconds deciding whether we actually answer that call, why should the noise continue while we ponder?
