Got my FireTV (FTV)yesterday. Here is my take after a day or so with it.

My unpackaging impression was that it was nicey boxed up, but I noticed that the unit itself as well as the remote felt a little cheap compared to the ATV. The initial setup is very easy and it ties right into your Amazon account and libraries. Of course, you have access to Amazon Instant video in HD and Prime Music. I easily installed Pandora, iHeartRadio, and even Slingbox player and they all worked great so that was a good start. I then delved into the world of sideloading what Amazon didn't want me to install and found it was pretty easy and most everything works well. I installed Firefox, Chrome, Kodi, and they all work very nicely. They open in a snap! Here's the icing on the cake for me, I installed TVGo and it actually works!

The Amazon home page, of course, is featuring lots of things they want to sell you. Where the ATV just has movies and the like at the very top of the homepage, the Fire layout has horizontal rows of Movies, TV shows, games, etc. along with "recommendations." But, if you can look past the clutter, it's quite easy to use and super quick.

When you sideload an app, they do not show up on the home screen, so you have to dig into settings to open them. Fortunately, there are a few alternatives. I installed Firestarter which is an alternative launcher and gives you a clean homepage with just the app icons. I configured it so that one press of the home button on my remote takes me to the Amazon home screen and two presses takes me to the Firestarter home screen.

The voice command on the remote is nice. It does somethings Siri won't, for instance I can ask Alexa the weather, sports scores, etc. But, if I say "Pandora", it opens a highlighted word "Pandora" and shows me a bunch of videos that may have "Pandora" in the title or something. I can tell it to play Tom Petty music and it just does, using Prime Music. I can tell it to play my Tom Petty station on iHeartRadio and it will do that. It won't do the same for Pandora. Voice searches for something like "Modern Family" are quick but only showed Amazon Instant Video options, it did not include HULU, which I have installed and am subscribed to.

One negative, the FTV will not support Open VPN or similar without rooting.

The FTV has a micro sd card slot as well as a usb port. Just for the heck of it, I plugged in my Logitech wireless keyboard dongle and was surprised to find that it worked instantly. The mousepad and touchpad come in quite handy, especially when you are trying to navigate things you have sideloaded. In fact, I would say it's a necessity and I have ordered a nice bluetooth keyboard and touchpad.

I put a movie on a usb stick and plugged it in and navigated to it using ES File Explorer and it played without any fuss.

In summary, I am really impressed. To be honest, this box does everything ATV does and more. (except access iTunes music and video) It is lightning fast and is giving me all the features on a TV box I was missing. I still really like my ATV4. It has a classy easy to use interface and works great. But, if I could only have one, it's no contest; I would keep the FireTV.

Has anyone reviewed a Tablo DVR with their new Apple TV app?

Due to terrain we can't get OTA to save our lives. We're totally stuck until locals start streaming and we can do some sort of streaming a la carte. Then of course there is the Sunday Ticket issue, but at least if we can get the programming we want streaming, including local news, we can put DirecTV into vacation mode in the off season. We don't actually watch a lot of network programming, but we do watch live programming so that's a bit of a problem.

What does that have to do with the question?

Tablo has yet to release the app. They say "Spring". Currently, there are 2 ways to view Tablo via the AppleTV: AirPlay and Plex. There is a Plex Tablo channel that works decently, albeit with a few bugs. So on an AppleTV 4 with the Plex app, you have a "native" option.

The video Tablo released showing the app looks very promising. Additionally, the currently available Channels app that uses the HDHomeRun boxes looks fantastic, although Channels/HDHomeRun currently lacks DVR capabilities (it is in beta). So ultimately, we are within a couple of months of having 2 viable options for watching live and recorded OTA directly on the ATV4.

I'm curious to know how it goes. I'm really hating right now on this multi ecosystem environment. It feels like Beta vs VHS again, but this time there is about zero chance of a winner. All the ecosystems just need to link up with UV and Disneys content lockers, problem solved, at least as far as access to the media goes. The current situation is crap for the consumer.

I'm a bit frustrated on several fronts with Apple in this arena, but still holding out a bit of hope. They are absolutely behind the power curve. They could have (and should) been using H.265 with 1080p for improved video and feeding us 7.1 audio (DTS-MA, DolbyTrue HD, and Atmos) with the roll out of ATV4, but seem to be content with compromise. Deliver a better 1080p product, which for right now is more important than 4K. Then bridge to 4K later, yet let the device do 4K for early adopters. Offer the closest product you possibly can to BD, which they aren't doing.

They called ATV4 the future of TV stepping into the Videophile arena essentially with a DVD player with better picture quality (yet not the best) while forgetting the sound environment has moved on. They should be embarrassed. Like I said, I hold out hope for a change to this. They have until Christmas. If nothing changes I'm punching out myself. I'll still use their iPad and iPhone devices, because they work so damn well, but I'll be punching out of the ecosystem. I'm at a point where I wish they'd just launch an iTunes app for other TV type devices like Roku or NVIDIA Shield. Their file format is just fine for Apple devices, but I really need something far more robust in the home.

I really think the multi-ecosystem will continue to be the case until the user base for one of these devices becomes large enough for cable profits to be threatened. If Apple would ever launch their much-rumored streaming service, then they may be able to get that user base.

BTW: UV is a movie industry scam. I want a file, I don't care if it's DRM locked. They could yank the servers tomorrow and it would all be gone.

What does that have to do with the question?

Tablo is an OTA DVR so reviewing the app wouldn't be a prudent activity and I explained why given the context of the thread being about going off the reservation.

If they pulled the plug, half the universe would have a meltdown. It just drives me batty that they all don't play well together. Really frustrating.
