I'm considering switching from my 15" 2.6ghz 16gb 460 to the 13" 2.0ghz 16gb NTB.

I actually had the 13" NTB model when they were released, but also had the 15" on order and wanted to try both before deciding which to choose.

After nearly 2 weeks with the 15", I am underwhelmed. I average about 4 hours battery life on very basic usage (email, web, Spotify, calendar, dropbox). The touch bar is a gimmick, and absolutely useless. I miss the ESC key and physical buttons press on the volume/brightness function keys. The trackpad is also too big, causing misclicks and palm rejection not working sometimes.

The only advantage for the 15" is the actual screen size, and TouchID.

The 13" NTB has the best speakers of the 3 models, consistently 8 or more hour battery life, more than capable processing power for most tasks, and much better value. In terms of cons, lack of TouchID and the smaller screen.

I'm torn between the 13" NTB and the 15"...

Just curious since you used the 13" before. The trackpad for 13" is pretty big as well. Does it cost you misclick?

If your mostly using it for browsing and videos I would go with the base macbook 12 and save even more money.

I just think the 15" is really expensive. But it's an awesome machine, I've thought about returning it by apples holiday return period but it's a beautiful piece so I'm going to keep it. Touch bar is too new too be useful but its definitely not a deal breaker.

I updated tonight - I find the palm rejection is much better now. And I love the keyboard. Couldn't make it to store worked late....Still debating UGH

Can software updates possibly fix battery life??

What percentage you use for screen brightness ?
I think the screen is one of the major reasons why prople coming from previous gen are experiencing terrible battery life.
If you had the 2015 mbp 15 at 75% brightness on this newer model I would tone it down to a 60 or 65% when indoors.
Even if a software updates can increase battery life it will be minimal.
The problem compared to the previous gen is the brighter screen , touch bar and smaller battery.
Also Apple could implement a function to disable the TB. It doesn't make much sense lol but then again on windows laptop like alienware you can disable the trackpad, if using an external mouse.

i dont think so, people can go easily 10 hours on a Non TouchBar. the touchbar seems to be getting 6 hours with light usage.

Hard to explain 4 hours difference on models so similar. has to be software, touchbar or something

Yah and also higher spec and a slightly faster GPU all add up in the long run.
We just need someone that has both models to run some tests.
The mbp nTB it's coming back to bite Apple in the rear end lol
It was a stupid move for the company to make a tb and a ntb model.
Way to many options. Keep it simple, makes everyone happy and it's cheaper for Apple in the long run.
Why they even make a 13 inch i don't get it. You have the macbook air (most succesull Apple laptop) that's been sitting there for what now ? 2 years ?
I would rather have a 15inch and 17 inch option then have the macbook air and that other tiny macbook 12 inch.
Im out of here my brain is going to explode.

So Ive had the 15" touch machine since day one and I am a bit disappointed to say the least.

I use the machine really for browsing, office teamviewer to log in my work PC and that's really about it.
Ive had the 'top' macbook pro for the past 5 generations.

If I return this unit and go to 13" base non touch will I notice a drop in speed for the things I do? Going from i7 16 ram Dedicated GPU to a i5 8 ram no GPU...

I actually prefer the smaller size and can use the additional 1500 bucks to put towards a Windows Desktop I'm building at home for home office work.

Has anyone done that move?

I'm sorry but I have to laugh. A $3k to $4k "Pro" computer used for browsing and now your thinking about downgrading to a more reasonable model and you are concerned about speed? Wow.

Is that anything like buying a Ferrari to sit in traffic?

People do that all the time - Ferrari even has a special front-engined model for those folks - the California :)

We need a 15" WITH Touch ID, NO touchbar and NO dedicated GPU - that would resolve my issues with it and I'll happily jump back to a 15.

lol pretty much.
I honestly think the vast majority of people that purchase Apple laptops are not professionals.
I only hear the word professional on apple forums.
I think we lie and say we are professional because we need to justify spending 4k on a laptop.
Well I'm gona finish editing the next x man movie on my 13 nTB MBP then im off to sleep.
Good night folks.

I would like Apple to bring back the 17 mbp with the new screen and slap a GTX1070 in there. But i doubt they will.

this makes me feel really good 15" premo customers are considering the nTB

love mine, but I have casual uses. it feels SOOOOO fast compared to my 12" rMB 2015 I will say,

but of course it would,

they definitely have a sleeper hit on their hands,

Never had issues with the 13" touchpad on both NTB and TB models. I only had issues the 15" model.

Completely agree, a 15" with TouchID and iGPU, and a bigger battery with the space savings would be ideal

returned it last night and bought a surface book - gonna give it a go for a bit.

I have had a 15" touch bar $2799 model for several weeks. After much thought I went and purchased a 13ntb base model. The decision to try the 13" was based upon the extra $1500 for the 15" and that I have an iMac 27" that has been sitting since I got the 15". The touch bar is very cool but I have so far had very little use for it. Going to check battery life on this 13" and compare to my 15"

Whats the verdict on the battery life?

I this is what happened - I had problems with the machine - I decided to swap to 13" went to apple store couldn't do 13" was way to small........

So I returned it and got a surface book - the surface book is amazing - such a cool machine but I just can't NOT swap left and see my stocks constantly.

There are things that apple does so well and nobody can copy. My wife fell in love with the surface book and has stolen it from me - sold her 13" old mac book

I went running back to apple store to get another 15" with 455 and 2.7....

Not that I've thought about it its actually an amazing machine (except for battery life and the useless track bar)

So true. I'm typing this on my XPS 13 (2015) while my MBP 15" (2016) is under repair, and as excellent as Windows 10 is, it doesn't compare to the small things Apple gets right. I already miss the ability to reply to SMS/iMessage, the multiple Space/workstations much akin to Linux, and the ability to see my files from the Dock. Oh, and logging on with your fingerprint is so convenient. I used to be heavily invested in customizing Windows to work like Mac, but it's refreshing having the functionality out of the box.

I can squeeze out about 7 hours of battery life on my base model 15", but I've actually purchased another MBP with the 460 card and am going to sell the base model once I get it back.

If Apple ever made a 13" MBP with a dedicated GPU, I would be all over it. I actually miss the smaller footprint but the 15" isn't impossibly larger.
