off topic, sorry, but since I'll be picking one up, can I get some ideas for accessories to buy? I would like a line out cable for better audio quality, and I amlooking for a case. Do the included accessories let you ave AV out or anything like that? Does it have a non usb charger for the wall?

Buy the current iPhone. They're going for way cheaper (especially on craigslist) and you can use it as an iPod touch except it'll have more features, and a speaker!

I just bought an iphone off ebay that I'll use for campus wide wifi and for text messaging and calling. I won't be using any data because it won't be worth it for me and don't want to be straped down to 2 more years.

First of all, it's $30/month for two years. Second of all, over two years, that adds up to $720. Nowhere near a couple thousand.

I factored in the cost of the voice plan into "a couple thousand". I wonder if it's possible to get the phone with data and text messages only... that'd be a very reasonable $35/month.

But then no phone...
Hmm... more thinking to do.

Uh... a phone is kind of a necessity, no?
Why would you factor a voice plan in. Would you factor your current voice plan in the cost of buying an iPod Touch?

The iphone costs $199 + (~$70 x 24 months) for $1880.

You're on the right track, but you're still miscalculating a major part of the equation. You should only add on the portion of the subscription fee that is ABOVE what he already pays or will pay with another phone's plan during that some 24 month time period.

For example, if his current phone plan is $60 a month, then staying with his current plan is costing him $1440. So using the iPhone plan instead of his other phone's plan would only cost him $1880 - $1440 = $440 additional over what he's going to be paying out otherwise anyway.

Well yes and no. As much as I would love to use the phone to its full potential, I wouldn't talk on nearly as much as I'd use it for web browsing. And if I were able to surf the web over 3G, that's one area that the iPod Touch can't do. It'd be a sort of super-iPod Touch.

The only thing I could find was the "Text Accessibility Plan", for dead customers which is data-only. The thing is you have to prove your disability.

Dead customers?!
