Everything costs a silly amount, budget very carefully.

London has a habit of draining your accounts dry.

Very true, and between the US$ exchange rate & Ken's travel increases $1000 should get you a weeks Oyster Card ;)

A good source of financial info is MSE.

I remember the UK to be rainy, rainy, rainy -- I am guessing all the cold weather clothing I had for NYC will suffice? I was thinking of buying rain boots, or are regular waterproof boots OK?
This is a bit of a misconception. We don't get a lot of rain in the UK. In fact my quick research shows that in the last 12 months London had 24 inches of rain, whilst New York had 44 inches, so I think you NYC clothing will be just fine ;) source

Anyway, travel around whenever you can, stay safe and enjoy your time in the UK :)

The MegaBus can cost as little as £1 (with an extra 50p booking fee). You can't beat that value if you are on a budget.

Just remember to goto the toilet before you board, and not drink anything. I dont think they have toilets on board. You can get some cheap rail fares if you book in advance. You can goto Scotland for £28 return if you're lucky + its a nice rail journey.

If you're a cyclist, why not cycle around London? The best way of seeing London in my opinion. The Gumtree
is a good place to buy second hand stuff (Gumtree might be your friend, its the london equivelent of Craigslist.

Having lived in London for 7 years, i've not really had any problems, safety wise (touch wood). With a bit of common sense, you'll be fine.

I met mariahlullaby for lunch today and introduced her to mushy peas. :D

Lovely lady too, hope she enjoys her stay here... and if there are any meetups, then I'll see if we can get her along. :)

Hey! I am looking to study abroad in England too, I have always wanted to visit and I attended a meeting today about going, however not until 2009 fall semester because i signed a lease on an apt for next year >_<

Anyways the lady I met with told me about two school for my major (human resources management, communications, public relations (basically business of talking)) and they are Sheffield Hallam University, and I believe the University of Worcester.. How are these schools anyone care to explain the reputation they give off? Also where abouts are they located, and anyone from around there? Since this is so far off I really didn't look into it yet (plus I just got this information today :p), and I figured that this is the best way to get information :).

Not sure I would recommend either myself but that is just me. Check out the Sunday Times University Guide.

Sheffield Hallem is ranked 63rd in the country and Worcester is ranked 77th. That is based on Business courses which sounds pretty similar to what you want to do. Some people don't agree with University rankings so feel free to ignore them :).

Sheffield is a great city though, I have family there and they love it.

And thank you again! Blue Velvet showed me around the area and yes, to peas (which were delicous on fish!). We had a wonderful walk around and I picked up where to go for all the essentials :p

Learn to love accents!
:D

Haha it shouldn't be that bad right now I am surrounded by West Virginians, and people who say "wuada" for "water."

Ah thank you very much, I will keep you guys posted as to when and exactly where I am going probably after today I need to call my business advisor to see what classes to take to get ready to leave.

I appreciate everything so far guys!

I presume you mean Wales :)
I certainly hope so. Otherwise, I want to see photos.

Thanks guys! I am living in a student living center, brand new (don't want to post the exact name for safety's sake) in King's Cross. I also just found out that I will have a communal kitchen to make my food in, so any suggestions where to go grocery shopping for cheap would be great. Also, how much do you think would be appropriate to budget per month to live in London? My housing will be paid for, but I need to pay for meals, transportation, etc.

Isn't there a Sainsburys Local near Kings Cross and Mornington Crescent? I don't know where you live, so it's hard to give advice. Warren Street should have one as well, I think.

Living expenses per month, excluding money spent hanging with friends, drinking, etc: £120. That's around £20 to £25 per week on groceries, and £5 to 10 per week on drinks, sweets, etc. You live near uni, so transportation won't cost you much.

I don't live in London but my perception is that it's the same as any other big city and some parts of it are best avoided.

Yes, definitely avoid areas like Kings Cross at night. Oops!

IF you come over to Sheffield for a visit feel free to get in contact with me as I am at the University of Sheffield so I can come and meet you, so you around the wonderful city.

Honestly I can't wait, I wish I could go next year, but i got sucked into getting a lease with two of my friends. I hope you're still in school during the 2009 Fall semester because things are really looking good for then, if not then I am going to TRY to get out of my lease for next spring semester (year from now).

Plus it would be awesome to meet another mac enthusiast I'm the only one here at my uni :(:(
