oh no, let’s all hope that Apple never goes near anything Amex. Horrible network to be part of if you spend time with your feet off US soil.

I spend a lot of time "off US soil". I live in Toronto and Lisbon, spend time in Washington DC, New York, Tuscany, Paris and Barcelona and while there are definitely places that don't accept AMEX, those where I would use it like restaurants, car rentals and gas and often grocery stores, accept AMEX just fine.

I have had no issues using my Costco VISA in Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, England, Croatia, Bosnia, Amsterdam, Netherlands, France, Norway and The Gummi Bear Factory Store.

Not sure if you're just being snarky but I think you understood me: Apple Card is not available to residents of any country, other than the United States. Of course once you have the card, you can use it anywhere.

and a lot of "mom and pop" shops in California do not accept Amex, so that would make Amex a bad choice.

Nice to know :

Part of the reason the EU forced Apple to open up Apple Pay was the high fees card companies charge for transactions.

It's a bit of a philosophy thing. In the US consumer protection agency protects the rights of companies to make (as much) money as they see fit. In the EU they protect the consumers rights and their goal is to reduce consumer expenses.

Several countries also has a national function/system that piggybacks on Visa/Mastercard debit cards that is 1/10 of the cost for the merchant. Credit cards don't have this which is part of why they offer the customer points and cash back. But this way the merchant still pays the high fee. Not opening Apple Pay forced higher transaction fees.

So...part of the story at least
