Hey there. At home we've got a set of altech lansing 2100's on one of our windows computer. I agree, there were a great set of speakers. For Christmas last year (2006 for those a year behind) a received the Creative i-trigue L3800 speakers. They are 2.1 so there is a sub that needs to be put somewhere. I know that you were after 2.0's but I believe the extra hassel of the cables running under your desk is a better option. They have exceptional sound quality. They sound better than my Dad's iPod Hifi and are only a fraction of the price (around a third of the price).

Thats just my 5 cents worht. Hope it helps you out.

I've had the Companion 2's for a while now and I'm still loving 'em. They are great speakers, especially if you have limited space and don't want the clutter of a subwoofer under your desk. They sound good enough at lower volumes that I very rarely turn them up even halfway. I totally recommend them.

I'll too definitely recommend the Bose Companion 3. Best set of speakers I've ever heard. Amazing quality and loudness considering the size!

So what would you recommend if you had plenty of deskspace and wanted a 2.1 speaker system?

umm...

1. Altec Lansing FX6021
2. HK Soundsticks
3. Klipsch ProMedia 2.1
4. Bose Companion 3 (only b/c of the price)

but remember it really matters what you listen to and what you are looking for...those altec's are what i have and i love them...my dad has the soundsticks II as well and they are close...but remember the Soundsticks II are like 3 years old now?

I would recommend this scandyna Se speakers.. built-in amp i think.

Woah! I am now in FadetoBlack's exact same prediciment. I too have limited desk space (and cash) so have been stumped when it's come to 2.0 choices.

My 10 year old Sony boombox has died, so now it looks like I'll have to pimp my eMac's speakers with, thanks to F2B's thread, the Bose. However, I still see a lot of people saying how awful Bose are, that you are paying for a name. In the UK, the Apple store sells the Companions 2s for £99. Is that too much? They have the Klipsch ProMedias for £69. Is it still worth going for Bose?

i would say get the Klipsch...the bose are always overpriced and you can notice a slight, VERY SLIGHT difference...but im not sure its worth the difference....b/c if you were an audiophile or someone that could tell the difference immediately...you wouldnt be getting 2.0's let alone computer speakers...

You've swayed it, sir! And Amazon has them for only £60. However, I think Amazon.co.uk have got their blurbs mixed up. This is their description:

"THX-certified, three-piece computer audio system"

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Klipsch-ULTRA2-0-ProMedia-2-0/dp/B0006TIEZS/sr=8-1/qid=1171136856/ref=sr_1_1/202-7411709-2113411?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

Also, will they sound better than my Sony boombox (a CFD S28L if that means anything - back from a time when you could get a half decent boombox from the brand)

Klipsch makes a good product, i dont know if they are gonna sound better than your boombox, but they sound good-they are probably the best 2.0 speakers on the market-or close to them, and they are definitely the best for their price range.

The Logitech z2300's offer pretty good sound for a good price.

ya but the klipsch definately sound better...but for the price the Logitech's arent bad...

This is probably due to the Logitech's lacking a dedicated tweeter...but their phase plug system is quite good in of itself, not to mention it looks pretty stylin with the dust covers off.

My roommate has the Klipsch promedia 2.1s. I agree they do sound good. But I got my z2300s for 100. :)
