I was going to say something along the lines of 'the 4th sub pixel does nothing but blow out colours'. But it seems the jury is still out on that one. Now, you'll also have to read this page on how what this pixel actually does, written by someone who knows LCD's.

I haven't personally seen the screen, so I'm not going to pass judgement, but from that 2nd link above, it doesn't look like that pixel contributes anything. Though it might produce yellower yellows, that might make all the difference.

Considering that Sharp builds many of the LCD panels that ship in different brands of TV's I think they know what they are doing when it comes to making a great panel.

As far as Sharp's Quattron 4 color technology goes I really do think it makes a difference when I compare the TV against the 3 color TV in my bedroom. I don't see where it "blows out colors" as you say. It does make the yellows, oranges, and brass colors pop out, but in a good way. It makes those colors seem more natural to me and when you see something yellow you notice it and it looks good.

TV picture quality like audio quality is highly subjective though. One person would be completely happy with a budget brand like Sylvania and another wouldn't be happy with the best TV on the market. It all depends on what looks good to your eyes.

Have you considered getting a plasma tv? They have better pictures than LCD's. Burn in or image retention is not an issue in them either. I have a Panasonic Viera and it works great. I hook my MBP up to it all the time to watch movies and tv shows.

I'd buy a Samsung. We've got a Samsung in our family room in one house that is absolutely phenomenal, but out of your price range. We've got a couple Insignias, they're decent, but if you'll be watching the TV frequently, I'd stay away. Our LG is fair, not too special, but gets the job done. We just picked up a Samsung LNC530 for the basement in our summer home for around $650. It's a great set. If you can afford it, I'd spend a little more and get a 120Hz model, but otherwise I'd stick with Samsung.

That LG looks pretty good. LG usually makes pretty good stuff. In fact, they make panels for other people, so I figure they know what they are doing. That one also has really good reviews. Nothing below 4 stars.

I also just want to say how much I hate that "click to add to cart to see the price" stuff. It's very annoying.

I'm pretty happy with my Samsung. The colors are great, and I love the ambient light sensor that mine came with. Makes watching movies in the dark late at night much easier on the eyes.
