My coworker is selling a almost brand new 2010 mac mini for $500. Is that a good deal or should I wait for the 2011 refresh? I'll be using it mainly as a media center.

If it's really barely used I would go for it at that price. The refreshed mini is likely to cost $699 still and the price for the 2010s isn't likely to drop to the $500 level even after the refresh. 2009 minis are selling for that amount still.

I'm thinking of getting a used on as well. Not from a friend, but from CL. It has been upgraded to 4GB RAM and he agreed to $425, it has the power cord and discs, but not box and the warranty just expired. Worth the risk?

There's two weeks left on it.

okay and by 2 weeks left does it mean on the one year plan and you are talking about a 2010 server. that means you can buy applecare for about 119

you would have 2 years warranty left. you would have a total outlay of 619 the 2010 server sells for 849 in apple online refurb store with 1 year care that can be bumped to 3 years care for 119 more. so if you mean a 2010 server your cost is 769 with 2 year warranty against 965 with 3 year warranty

Yea, it's the 2010 sever and there's 2 weeks left on the 1 Year Warranty.

Which would you recommend?

that is a tough call 650 for the server with 119 for the apple care is 769. it is a pretty good savings.

my question would be are you going to use for being a server?

or do you want to put in regular snow leopard and use as a ht then change to lion down the road?

my answer would be if you want it to be a server and will use the sever software inside of it buy it and add the apple care.

if this is more of a home use computer with a bit of home theater. and an eye towards lion don't get it. wait for the 2011.

oh if it is an ebay item look into square trade warranty at www.squaretrade.com

sometimes they can be good.

I plan to use the server software. I will also be using it as a media center. It is my understanding that Front Row will be removed in Lion. Is it better to purchase the 2010 model then?

well it is funny cause it is the land of if that we are talking about. IF you want a server and a media center and front row you should get the 2010 server at the 650 price and add on apple care. It will certainly do what you want and there is a good chance the 2011 is going to drop some support with lion osx to various programs. I would take the certain thing and pay the 650 add the apple care to the 2010 server and be done with it.

worst case is the 2011 comes out and is really good for you. you would then sell the 2010 with the added apple care ask 800 on ebay maybe get 700 clear and use it to buy a 2011. your loss would be under 100 bucks.

if you don't get the server now and lion s(u)cks the big one you may find getting a 2010 server a month from now hard to do.

then end up buying one from apple refurb for 849 plus tax you would be out more then 100 .
