You do not need a client dedicated to Outlook.com. Mail works just fine.Hotmail is no longer.

Yeah, Thunderbird is end of life. A good email app that builds ontop of Thunderbird is Postbox. I use it for work because it's very powerful and looks a lot more like a native Mac app than Outlook for example. Outlook is ugly.
I don't subscribe to the recent trend of Mac email apps with excessively simple UI's either. Maybe for light emails in personal use, but never for conducting business.

I've been using postbox for over a year now and I have to say it crashes at the worst times and rather often. Too often I have to say for a supposedly polished app that isn't so cheap.Postbox? I should check that one out.
