The first time I took my mother to SF, she wanted a room with a view of the Bay so we ended up in the (then new) Argonaut down by the cablecar turn at Hyde. It was a lovely hotel - in an old warehouse with brick walls and some interesting decor - and a great view of the Bay.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, if you're looking for rooms with a view, the places to go are the Mark Hopkins, the Fairmont, or any of the hotels on Nob Hill. You will pay for it, but the views are excellent. Don't try to drag luggage up Nob Hill - take a cab.

Yeah that is great advice. I stayed at the Mark Hopkins for WWDC 2005. Walking downhill the first time was a breeze. Walking back up - well let's say that I only did it once. :)

When I was in SF for MacWorld 2006 I stayed at the Argent, which is about a block and a half from the Moscone Center. It was expensive ($200/night) but I knew from past experience with conventions that I'd want to be fairly close to the action and not have far to go when I was totally wiped out after a long day at sessions and marching around the exhibit hall. The Argent was very nice and I had a great view -- could see part of the bay and the Bay bridge. I think if I were in SF doing just the touristy thing that I'd probably want to stay in the area of town closer to Fishermans' Wharf and so on. Definitely I did not bother with a car and didn't need one. I used the cablecars and taxis when I needed to get somewhere and that worked out just fine.

Not the greatest neighborhood, but right on top of BART and other public transportation. Not fancy, but very quiet for a city hotel, especially if you can get a room on the concierge floor.

what do you mean with "not the greatest neighborhood"? on which floor is the concierge floor?

(thinking about a trip to north california...)
