Plants bs zombies is iPad game and good too
They have both. Get the iPad version for sure. One of my favorite games. I completed it on the iPhone and then bought it again for the iPad. Loved it.
The list could go on and on! Here's a few less well known suggestions...
Mirror's Edge - First iPad game I bought. Touch controls work well and it's a lot of fun if you get into the running-against-the-clock gameplay.
Space Miner HD - Well done shooter/RPG but the story really makes it. It's very corny but I found it to be a lot of fun.
Broken Sword - A re-release of a classic point-and-click adventure. It works very well on the iPad.
Canabalt - Loads of fun despite only using a single button.

Mission Europa! An FPS that reminds me of Doom and Quake but with waaaay bigger mob battles and excellent pacing. I play in 2X mode and it is awesome. I made a gameplay video to show the style of play:
