Any job with tips. Not some sharing with everyone split, but where you keep most of what you make.

Look for waiter/waitressing jobs. Might run into problems with alcohol serving since you aren't 18 or 21 (one of the two), so look for places that don't serve alcohol.

Either that or commission sales, but those are few and far between now.

I worked at a convenient store when I was 17, only job around so I took it, I worked enough to buy a car. High School jobs are not glamorous.

Oh trust me I know that, but that dealership deal sounds interesting, I am also very much into cars, (its what I do on the weekends:p), but yeah this week after I finish submitting all my college apps, I will be taking a look around for some jobs.

this whole thread is a bunch of bull.

I have no compassion for you and thank you for all the colorful names you gave me.

buying a macbook pro yet then complaining you have no money is just like the people who go to the soap kitchen because they cant afford food for their kids although they are able to afford their daily pack of ciggys.

i still stand by assertion that you go to the wilton supermarket and ask for 50s. I've been to that area of Fairfield county.
Many heads above the clouds up there.

what is your issue with the op trying to work?

I remember both my grandparents and especially my parents saying if I didn't get a job when I was able (16 years old) that I better start looking to live on my own as they couldn't fathom any one who is able to work, not working as to them, it's a sign of sheer laziness and guess what, it is

So what if he bought a mbp? he is trying to get ideas for a job. isn't that what you want? why do you think its a better idea for him to beg for 50's on a street corner?

why do you care what he buys? how about I start microanalyzing every purchase you do and go tell you to go beg for money.

remember that saying, "if you don't have something nice to say, then it's better to not say anything at all"?

wise words, maybe you should consider them

Just curious, what did you do at the dealership? I'm 17 as well, and would like to work with cars, too.

i was a detailer

I essentially prepared the new cars as they came in and all cars that were sold, new or used

Quite cool as you get discounts on parts, cars (if you want to buy one) and you get to drive alot of cars:)

Thanks for the assist. And oddly enough, I actually do like cleaning cars, I actually did do a really good detail on my friends Eclipse this past weekend. I never even thought of that, I will definitely go around and see what the local dealerships and car detailers/washers have to offer.

Mmmm soap kitchens, wish we had those up here, most of our homeless people smell! Great idea!

The kid is trying to get a job and you are angry with him?

OP if you will be around awhile try a pet services job. Pet sitting, walking, feeding for people who don't have the time or are on vacation. Everytime I hear how much my friends pay for a person to come by for 1/2 an hour (35 bucks for 2 dogs) I am awestruck.

Best of luck, don't let others get you down. But be prepared for some horrible jobs. My best job before growing up was working on a golf course helping people get set up to go out and play. They would tip anywhere 2-20 on the way in, same on the way out.

Golf. I worked a county club throughout high school and made an insane amount of money after tips. My situation was pretty unique (very prestigious country club), but I was making at least 5x what my friends in retail were making, while working less hours than them.

A bunch of my friend's actually caddy, and they get BANK for it. I just can't stand golf I know its a great paying job, but I just wouldnt be able to do it, because I would get insanely bored, and I dont know enough of the game to understand.

I see you're from CT. I've made it as far east as North Dakota but I assume you have snow in CT? See if you can't get a job at a Ski Resort. The job sucks and the pay blows - but the free skiing and ski-bunnies makes it all worth it. I grew up at the base of Mt. Hood and it was freaking amazing.

Otherwise, start your own business. Even if it's mowing lawns or doing something equally stupid... calculate your hourly wage and you'll see it blows away your traditional teen employment opportunities. Take a little initiative and leave the rest of your teen cohort in the dust.

Just on a side note did you buy the rights to use the Coldplay song in your video?

Well that's good, my friend who made the video said he made the song. I didn't question him even though it did sound awfully familiar. The site needs a complete overhaul. That's gunna be a Christmas break project, there have been so many tips here on how to make it better, I am going to use almost all of them, to make the site better.

Ok well its been a month (well 2 days short) and I am still jobless this economy is killing me, (like I am the only one...) anyway, my little company thing has brought me side jobs here and there, but I still am in need of a job.

Perhaps there are some new suggestions here that I perhaps haven't looked into yet.

Thanks again,

Kielan

Having worked a handful of jobs since i turned 13 <22 currently> I found that the restaurant business was an excellent money maker. Like you said, the economy might be hurting everybody but most people still like to get out once in and a while and enjoy themselves. I worked as a bar back lugging up 4 cases of beer at a time and changing the kegs when they kicked. To some it up I was the b*tch. I would work Thursday to Saturday nights and make bank. All cash. I don't know how some people feel on here about working off the books but its the way to go. I don't see the point of paying taxes when you are so young esp. since that is what your going to do for the rest of your life when you graduate. I was able to buy my own car, pay for insurance and never had a problem being able to get beer. Everyone here is saying to get a job with commission, screw that, get a job off the books. Lloyd

Moral: NONE of my previous work experience helped me AT ALL in getting the job I was trying to get. Wasted a bunch of time, and got me a bunch of money, which I in turn, wasted.

Skillset>Spare Change :D

I agree but disagree. Skill sets are obviously going to be useful but I think it's good socially and for simple life experience to do frankly crappy jobs. I'm going into my master's degree for History, so I don't plan to having a blue collar job BUT I am glad I spent my high school life in fast food and my university life in manual labour. Good life experience, met people I would never meet in school and gave me an appreciation for people who sweat it out all day. Plus extra money to pay for my own stuff and not lean on my parents so much was a nice freedom.

edit: Annnnnnnd I just realized there was a second page. *doh*

i still say anything with tips available, waiter, busser, bartender helper (bar back?) will be better pay.

Right now I am pretty sure retail may be more difficult because its the end of the holidays, so sales are down. You can still try though.

Just walk through a mall and look at the stores. Then try them and think of similar stores that you like and wouldn't mind working at.

Or you could start your own landscaping business, mowing yards and the like.
