ECC=Error Correction Code, comes in Regerstered and non-Regerstered formats. Needed for use on Opterons, Athlon MP/64 FX and other servers. Is slightly slower clock for clock but I believe is gennerally more stable and deffinitally more expencive.

About RAM for Dual channel mode. Quite alot of DDR3200 was produced before the JDEC specs were released for Dual Channel DDR, hence many of the cheaper sticks arn't garenteed to work in Dual Channel mode. Just ask the shop assistant if it will work in Dual Channel mode, also since apple use Samsung RAM just ask for that.

I have 512 MB of apple PC3200 ram just sitting in the office, waiting for someone else to get a G5 that can add that memory to theirs. I can't use it.

so is it certain that if we have two apple modules installed and we upgrade with another type of ram (crucial for example), the new ram will not work with the existing apple ram?

Has this been the experience of everyone who has upgraded the ram in the G5?
