Being limited to Royale, Luna, and Royale Noir, I'm looking to broaden my horizons. I think that I have tried before, but I was a nooblet then and I screwed up my system. So, what to do? Suggestions? Mac-like themes would be a plus.
www.themexp.org Click on visual styles at the side. They do make you install some software, but you can uninstall it after.
Yeah, it installs a crappy search thing but you can uninstall it from "Add/Remove Programs". Me and my friend both use themes from this site and our computers are fine.
I use interfacelift.com for mine. Only thing is before you can use the theme, you have to edit the uxtheme.dll file in the Registry in order to use a theme other than a Microsoft-signed one. There are about a million different sites showing you how to do this, all for free. AFAIK, the various programs like StyleXP modifies that file in memory, but a fix for it will modify it permanently. Here's an FAQ about it.
I had that on my old P4 Toshiba for a while before I really cared. It blows! It slows everything down and there are about eleventy kajillion bugs. It has promise though. I do wish version 4 would come out and it'd look exactly like Leopard.
