In its case.
One year ago I posted that I replaced my AW5 with a Fitbit Charge 5 (see the post at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/goodbye-apple-watch-5-hello-fitbit-charge-5.2356911/) and I wanted to update. The MacRumor Forum regulars mostly disagreed with my decision and logic, but now that a year has passed I’m glad I did it. The Apple Watch was a much, much better smartwatch than the Charge 5; I would say the Charge 5 is really just a pretender when their marketing calls it a “smartwatch”; but as far as fitness/exercise/diet tracking I’ve found the Fitbit to be quite a bit better, at least for me, and especially in concert with its app on my iPhone 13.

My particular Charge 5 seems to be more accurate tracking heart rate than the AW5, especially on “smoother” applications like cycling. At Planet Fitness, the recumbent bike has its own HR tracker, and they always match. The AW5 seemed to count faster beats. On aerobic walks, the Apple would always count about 20 bpm slower than my actual HR, but the Charge 5 is more accurate.

Battery life on the Fitbit is 4 to 5 days (advertised to be 7), so it’s def a winner over the AW5 in that respect.

Information available on the Fitbit and its app seem to me to be more thorough than the AW5, too. For me, the watch face is much easier to navigate during exercise than the AW. On aerobic walks, I can go quickly with single taps from HR to Pace per Mile, average pace per mile, calories burned, steps, actual mileage, and time spent in exercise zones. The information updates immediately to the app, which shows pretty detailed exercise info in addition to a map of the walk.

Anyway, YMMV as they say - I’m not saying that y’all should go out and trade in your watches, but in my circumstance and lifestyle, after a year of use, the Charge 5 is my preferred watch. Someone in the old thread asked what I would think about it in a year - so here I am!

Good luck with your Fitbit. I used to use them before the Apple Watch and they were horrible. The hardware was breaking constantly. Just go to the Fitbit forums and read what is going on.

Ugh, same. I liked the Fitbit devices I had, and I had many, but the h/w always seemed unreliable. Hence the reason I had many. :D They fit a good spot in the market though, and to be fair I did have Fitbit replace one when it was outside of warranty, and then offer me a discount on a replacement for a second.

Tracking and stuff was good though. Just so unreliable.

My experience with Fitbit is different — my Charge 5 has been physically bulletproof and has operated flawlessly for over a year now. The three or four Fitbits I owned previously were the same.

I’m an active member of the Fitbit forums, and the point you “forgot” to mention is that they are help forums, not discussion forums. Most threads there are opened by people with questions/problems, and do not at all reflect the opinions of the majority of Fitbit owners. You also didn’t mention that 90(?)% of the issues raised are resolved.

‘The forums must be different that when I was a Fitbit user as it was out of control for defects And complaints were predictable. Fitbit was not replacing defective hardware and it was near impossible to get through to customer service. Maybe things have changed but there is no way they could change my opinion of Fitbit. I spent more money on hardware as it broke down and only way to replace it was for the customer to buy another.

When the first Apple Watch came out, I left Fitbit forever.

Well, sorry you had such a bad experience. I had one defective Fitbit, a “Charge HR” that I got in 2016. When I contacted Fitbit, they replaced it immediately for free - with a more expensive model! Yeah, if I were you with your experiences, I’d stick with AW too. 😊

I retired my last Fitbit earlier this year when they removed the group challenges, to be honest they were the only thing I kept going with it so long for. My Apple Watch is accessible in a way my Fitbit never was, at least with the early ones you could set basic things like alarms via the app, then they put those things on device and it became an absolute farce trying to juggle a magnifier and the Fitbit, whilst trying to keep the screen on and use it to find the right settings, I gave them years to make some effort to make their devices more accessible, or to revert back to giving us the option to do all the basics via the app, but it only seemed to get worse. So there was no reason left for me personally to stick with it. At least with the aw I can turn voice over on in setup just like my phone, and do it all myself, like regular people, without any assistance. I had a few issues with fitbits refusing to charge after a few months, can’t complain about my experience there, they were quick to respond, and either replaced or gave a discount on a newer model without issue.

Ugh. Made the mistake of buying a Fitbit Charge 5 for my gf, she has a heart issue so I figured the ECG could be useful.

Over an hour on the phone with Fitbit support - they cannot get the ECG to work. Software update doesn't work on the device either.

Total gong show. They said they have escalated to Tier 2 and will call me back within 24 hours.

I realize it's just one device and is purely anecdotal, but so incredibly disappointing.

I always love the mention of the heart rate monitor. I had a reaction to the touted moderna save all snake oil. During the ordeal I spent many hours in the ER with heart monitoring. The apple watch was consistently within 2% of the ekg and standalone heart monitoring meter. Shortly there after I was placed on a portable heart monitor. I asked the doctor if they were able to compare the heart monitor results to the apple watch. Over the month the Series 7 apple watch was no more than 3% of the heart monitor. The doctor was intrigued by the results.

I really liked my Charge 2 (or 3, can’t remember which one I had) but its screen became faulty in less than a year. I got a free replacement, which developed a similar issue with the screen… I gave up on Fitbit after that and got an Apple Watch.

I had several, and I mean several, extended family members who wore FitBits daily and swore by them. They have all either stopped using wearables completely or switched to Apple Watch by now. FitBit is just not a good option. Too breakable, too buggy, no support, glorified e-waste.

I bought Fitbit every time they came out with a new model plus several times between when they broke. Some were DOA and Fitbit’s customer service was overwhelmed.

Regular AW looks like a toy but compared to this Fitbit it looks like a million bucks. Ultra on the other hand looks better than any Rolex and other luxury watches. If only they could give us 7 day battery life. Ehhhh

The only reliable Fitbit I've ever had was the old Fitbit One. It outlasted all the multiple watch Fitbit models my wife has had and I'd still be using it now if Fitbit hadn't removed the challenges. Absolutely stupid decision on their part.

My Fitbit Charge died days after the one year warranty expired. I've had friends with this same experience. I gave up on the Fitbit ecosystem because anything valuable is tied to their subscription. The only thing I miss is the multi-day battery as OP mentioned.

Doesnt bode well for anyone left in that eco-system -

"A new round of layoffs has hit Google, with cuts to teams across Google Assistant, augmented reality, and central engineering.

Fitbit, which Google acquired in 2021, was among the teams impacted by the latest cuts.

Fitbit founders James Park and Eric Friedman, who joined Google as part of the acquisition, announced Wednesday that they would be leaving the company — but several other senior employees are also out, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Hardware engineering director Mark Martinez and senior director Tim Johnson both announced they are departing the company. Jonathan Oakes, a longtime Fitbit product VP, is also leaving, as is Mark Silverio, Fitbit's VP of business strategy. It's unclear if these departures were voluntary.

"It's the biggest blow to us so far," said one Fitbit employee, who asked to remain anonymous because they were not permitted to talk to the media. "Many old time Fitbit people were affected."
