As a smartwatch, the Apple Watch blows Fitbit out of the water . . .
As a Fitness/Health tracker, Fitbit blows Apple Watch out of the water . . .

About two weeks ago I replaced my AW5 with a Fitbit Charge 5 and I’m happier than snot.

Fitbit optical heart rate sensor is not accurate at all when doing dynamic exercises. Cannot pair third party sensor.
In other words probably the most unreliable fitness watch made.
If you want something for step counting only…….you did good.

To each their own indeed…

I love the Apple Watch for the deep integration with other Apple products and services (being able to control my Apple TV’s and HomePods, iMessage, HomeKit, reminders, etc…). Fitness tracking was always second for me.

Ya see, Ahnold didn’t need no stinking smart watch to get crowned Mr. Universe and I also found that I was in the best shape of my life without all this fitness tracking nonsense. Spending more time worrying what my heart rate was than actually elevating it through exercise.

I had the best results just pushing myself to complete failure every time. The strength gains and mirror were the two best fitness trackers I’ve ever used.

This is my third Fitbit, and all of them have been very accurate with HR both during cycling and aerobic walking. There’s no need for a third party sensor. Where did you get the assumption that their HR sensor is not accurate? How many Fitbit watches have you used?

I did Fitbit long ago and their hardware quality was the worst! Good luck.

Out of curiosity I went to the Fitbit forums where I used to spend time and just as I thought the Charge 5 is pissing a lot of people off. I know there is nothing perfect, including the Apple Watch but what I see is typical for Fitbit when I used it and it has not changed!

Did you want someone here to try and convince you that you made the wrong choice?

Apple has the best heart rate tracker by far. This device is great for sleep tracking though. here's a great review:
. Personally I would be a bit concerned as Google owns fitbit also the pro subscription seems a rip off.

btw the apple watch with the new os is one of the best sleep trackers now available, certainly better than this fitbit.
. so i don't really see the fitbit as much of a challenger. fitbit is inaccurate as a movement tracker.

Interesting responses everyone. Fitbit has both “fanboys” and detractors; Apple Watch has both, also. In my personal experience (four Fitbit models and the Watch 5 I had for a couple of years), Apple produces a better smartwatch and Fitbit produces a better fitness/health tracker. Both companies produce excellent products which have different focuses. If you disagree with this, that’s fine — but at least have a reason instead of a snarky fanboy response. Yeesh.

I didn’t give you a snarky response. I’ve had Fitbit’s where the band on the Surge snapped off. I had the one, which was fitbits 1st smart tracker. It tracked steps only and you put it in your pocket.,I also had the original charge and the charge 2. If you look on Fitbits forums every device has a bunch of complaints and I mean a bunch of complaints. I find it comical to read them once every few months. That was my comment to you and it is fact. Compare the complaints on here to Fitbits and there is your answer. It has nothing to do with being a fanboy

I’ve tested 5 Fitbit Watches and all have disappointed in the heart rate accuracy when doing weight lifting, tennis and basketball. Everyone will surge very high heart rate when moving aggressively.
If your happy…..that’s what counts

I’d be more interested to read how you feel about this change in at least 1 year from now. Also, genuinely curious, you say you’ve used Fitbits before, which ones and how did you like them? How long did they get used? I used a Charge 2 and then 3 for about the past 5 years, I’m a fan of Fitbit for some elements of their devices (the two I used at least). However I must agree with the posters who noted their poor quality, especially bands, but the device itself also.

Not to criticize your post or decision, which I find interesting. In fact my partner has a Charge 5 and she likes it. I’d be interested to hear more such as, how long your other Fitbits lasted and what made you switch to Apple Watch 5 and what brought to back to Fitbit. Enjoy the new watch! The color screen is a good addition. And the heart rate zones are cool too. And of course battery life, no comparison to AW.

I’ve been testing this idea that one is better than the other for some weeks now, just my limited amateur experience of course, but it’s not at all clear to me how one is better than the other, they both seem fairly good and similar. I’m super happy AW added this, as it was the one lingering thing that kept me using my old Fitbit at night, for their good charts with REM and light/deep sleep.

I’m also interested in how I will feel about the Charge 5 in a year, especially in light of possible changes in the Apple Watch by Sept. 2023. To answer your questions, I think my original Fitbit was the Charge or Charge 2 - I got it in March 2016 as a birthday gift. I liked it quite a lot, although it was unable to keep an accurate HR during aerobic walks. I was a cyclist at the time, however, and it was very good with bicycling HR. I liked its sleep tracking, tracking of resting heart rate, VO2 Max, and I **really** liked the food/calorie intake/weight loss features. I used that happily for about a year, and it was the primary driver of a 45-pound weight loss. My second was a Versa, when I wanted a smartwatch in addition to a tracker. Unfortunately, its “smartwatch” features were less than I had expected. I got the AW5 in March of 2020 because it was the most revered smartwatch (deservedly), but in the same way I was disappointed in the Versa as a smartphone, I’ve always wished it was a stronger exercise/diet etc tracker.

The three Fitbits I’ve had, and the AW5, were (and are) all high quality. My adult children and a few friends of mine use Fitbits and have no quality issues.

With all due respect, when a person starts a response with “Uh,” — it’s a snarky response. Additionally, I’ve been a member of the Fitbit forums for over 6 years, and we have discussed the amount of complaints there frequently. The reason there are so many “complaints” there is because the subforum you’re referring to is one for people that are having difficulty with new devices. Your post, not detailing that little fact, was dishonest.

Thanks for the reply and details. I enjoy hearing about people‘s experience with these devices. Perhaps like a lot of mass-produced products there is inevitably a fair amount of “hit and and miss” where some people get luckier than others with the quality. Also possible that I personally wear out the Fitbit bands more than others, as compared to a couple of my family members who use Fitbits, they haven’t had torn bands as often as I have.

Finally, it’s always great to hear stories about folks improving their diet or weight etc. on these devices! — regardless which brand or company used — it’s really inspiring to know that we can monitor various health and fitness elements to improve, putting in no small amount of dedication and effort to do so, of course. I’m still working on similar goals myself. Cheers!

A quick update: After 5 weeks or so using a Fitbit Charge 5 as a replacement for my trusty ol’ Apple Watch 5, I’m still very happy with the decision. Like I said in the OP, the AW blows the Fitbit out of the water as a smartwatch (imho), but the Charge 5 is a much better fitness/health device. Both seem equal, as far as quality and build. The fitness features which the watches share seem more accurate on the Fitbit (heart rate tracking, ECG, step counting, etc.) and there are a number of features provided by Fitbit that the AW doesn’t have - like diet/calorie tracking, exercise specific steps (for runners and aerobic walkers), calories burned, weight tracking and sleep tracking. The Fitbit costs about 1/4 to 1/5 the price of an AW, and has better battery life by far.

I saw a TV ad stating that Apple Watch is now starting to include a sleep tracker - that’s cool. If Apple Watch matched the Fitbit’s health features, I would certainly consider coming back to AW, the only negative being the $$$. But for now, leaving the AW5 for the Fitbit device has been a wise decision. Not to mention the fact that my Granddaughter is thrilled with the (used) Apple Watch 5 I gave her lol!

Are you paying a monthly subscription fee to access any health data from your device?

I keep an eye on all hardware - and once there's a subscription model it turns me off - and I know that Apple provides some data that Fitbit puts behind a premium paywall.

If Apple did that I'd just do without the data, but just curious. I do have my Fitbit in a drawer here somewhere - I used it for steps - my daughter totally loved hers and was inseparable until it was lost a year ago... and she will not take an apple watch no matter how hard I try to pass my old S4 on to her lol...

It's 'too much' and she like the simplicity of Fitbit (and only charging once a week)

As a long time Apple user I always tell people get what works best for you. What works for me may not work for you :)

Enjoy.

You sir have the only Fitbit on earth that has a more accurate heart rate sensor than the AW

As far as I know the optional monthly fee for Fitbit fitness stuff is just for personal trainer type videos, unrelated to health data. Same with Apple Fitness.

I agree the simplicity of Fitbit, charging and lightweight make it preferable to many people. Having switched to Apple watch myself not long ago I’m just in an AW “phase” but I could possibly return to something like a Charge 5 for the reasons others outline above. It’s good to have choices!

Personally I absolutely hate the aesthetics of the fitbits or the Garmins. If I didn’t have an apple iPhone then I would have to make do with one. Looks are the deal breaker……
